Wiz Khalifa was sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania after an appeals court overturned an earlier criminal fine in a cannabis-possession case stemming from a 2024 festival performance. The Constanța Court of Appeal issued the sentence on December 18, 2025, and later challenges were rejected. As of HotNews’ May 21, 2026 report, Romanian police listed him as wanted under an execution warrant; the available reports do not establish that he has been arrested or is serving the sentence.

What happened at the Romanian festival?

The case began at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinești, Constanța County, in July 2024. Prosecutors alleged that Khalifa possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and consumed some on stage. That account and quantity were reported by Agerpres based on a DIICOT statement, and by the Associated Press; they should be understood as the prosecution’s account of the incident.

The court later convicted Khalifa of possessing risk-category drugs without authorization for personal consumption. The ruling’s legal wording concerns possession; it is distinct from the prosecutors’ account of what happened at the performance.

How did the case move from a fine to prison?

Date Decision or development
April 24, 2025 The Constanța Tribunal imposed a criminal fine of 3,600 Romanian lei. DIICOT appealed. (Agerpres)
December 18, 2025 The Constanța Court of Appeal upheld the prosecution’s appeal and replaced the fine with nine months’ imprisonment, ordered to be served in detention. Agerpres reported that the decision was final. (Agerpres)
February 26, 2026 The Associated Press reported that a court rejected Khalifa’s application to annul the sentence as inadmissible and rejected his request to suspend it as unfounded. (Associated Press)
May 7 and May 21, 2026 HotNews reported that the High Court rejected a cassation appeal on May 7 and that the Constanța Court of Appeal rejected a challenge to execution on May 21. HotNews also reported that an execution warrant had been issued and that Romanian police listed Khalifa as wanted. (HotNews)

Why did the appeals court impose a prison sentence?

The Constanța Court of Appeal convicted Thomaz Cameron Jibril, Khalifa’s legal name, under Article 4(1) of Romania’s Law 143/2000 for possession without authorization of risk-category drugs for personal consumption. Agerpres reproduced the operative ruling, which set the sentence at nine months and ordered detention.

#1 Best Overall

HotNews quoted the court’s reasoning that consuming the substance in public at the event, by an internationally known artist with significant influence over young people present, was an ostentatious act that increased the social danger of the offense. This is the court’s stated rationale as quoted by HotNews; the full judgment has not been independently reviewed here.

What is the reported penalty under Romanian law?

The Associated Press summarized the general penalty for cannabis possession for personal use in Romania as three months to two years’ imprisonment or a fine. That is general legal context, not Khalifa’s sentence: the appellate court imposed nine months’ imprisonment in his case. The statutory range is presented as reported by AP, not as individual legal advice.
