If Wirecast says “Activation Limit Exceeded” or that your serial number has been activated on too many machines, first deactivate Wirecast on the old computer if you can still access it. If you cannot, use Telestream’s License Reset Tool—but note that it resets all activations on the license, not just one computer. Then activate Wirecast on the dedicated streaming PC.
Why Wirecast reports an activation limit
Telestream says a single Wirecast license may be activated on one computer at a time. A license can be transferred by deactivating it on the original computer and activating it on the new one. A license purchased for multiple quantities permits a corresponding number of computers, according to Telestream’s Wirecast FAQ.
Wirecast v4 and later licenses are cross-platform between Mac and Windows, but cross-platform compatibility does not mean a single license can be used on both computers at the same time. Public documentation cannot show which device currently holds your particular activation.
Choose the right fix

Fix the activation limit step by step
1. Deactivate on the original computer if it is available
- Open Wirecast on the computer currently using the license.
- Open the license controls. Telestream’s support page lists Preferences > Licenses > Deactivate License on Mac and Preferences > Buy/Upgrade > Deactivate License on Windows. In the Wirecast 16 Mac guide, the path is Wirecast > Preferences > Licenses, then Deactivate.
- After deactivation completes, open Wirecast on the dedicated streaming PC and activate it using your existing serial number or license key.
Labels and menu paths can differ by Wirecast version. If you cannot find the control, check the version-specific directions on Telestream’s activation troubleshooting page.

2. Reset activations if the old computer is unavailable
- Open Telestream’s License Reset Tool.
- Provide the requested license key and email address or order ID.
- Read the tool’s warning before submitting: it resets all activations on that license.
- When the reset is complete, activate Wirecast on the dedicated PC with the existing license key.
Do not treat a full reset as a one-device release if other computers are using the same license. For a multiple-quantity license that needs an individual reset, contact Telestream support.
3. Activate on a computer without internet access
Wirecast’s Wirecast 16 Mac user guide points users to Telestream’s offline activation instructions when the computer is not connected to the internet. Offline activation changes how activation is completed; it does not change the one-computer-at-a-time limit for a single license.

If the activation error persists
Telestream’s activation page includes further cleanup steps for persistent license errors. These are more involved than deactivation or a reset, and the page does not clearly date the instructions. Check the current Telestream directions for your Wirecast version and operating system before removing files or uninstalling the application.
Mac follow-up
Telestream’s documented sequence is to deactivate from Preferences > Licenses, quit Wirecast, remove the specified Telestream and Vara Software preference files or folder if present, restart the Mac, relaunch Wirecast, and activate again. Follow the exact file locations listed on the Telestream activation page; do not delete unrelated files.

Windows follow-up
Telestream’s documented sequence is to deactivate from Preferences > Buy/Upgrade, quit and uninstall Wirecast, show hidden folders, remove the specified Telestream XML and Vara Software preference files, restart, download Wirecast again, and activate. Use the exact file locations on the Telestream activation page. If the steps do not resolve the issue, contact Telestream support rather than continuing to delete files.
When to contact Telestream or your reseller
- Contact Telestream if the reset and version-appropriate activation steps do not clear the error.
- If you purchased Wirecast through a reseller, Telestream’s FAQ directs customers to the reseller for license recovery.
- If you need an individual activation reset on a multiple-quantity license, ask Telestream support; the self-service reset affects all activations.
- If you cannot locate your license, use the purchase-history channels described in Telestream’s FAQ or contact the reseller that sold it.
