Rather than treating the buildings as static monuments, it uses an immersive 3D approach to show how people visit, work in, inhabit and make them. The 114-minute film was made over more than fourteen years; its cinema release timing depends on territory.
What is From Inside Out about?
Wenders’s film follows Zumthor’s architecture from intimate private homes to the David Geffen Galleries at LACMA, focusing on the relationship between spaces and the people who experience them. Its perspective is deliberately human: viewers are invited to move through the buildings as visitors, users, inhabitants and craftspeople do, rather than seeing them only as designs or exterior views. The Venice catalogue identifies the film as a 2026 documentary written and directed by Wenders, with Peter Zumthor and Anna Trauffer among its main cast. La Biennale di Venezia’s catalogue lists German, Swiss German and English as its languages; Swiss Films records the original version in those languages and lists the film as 3D, colour and DCP.
The sources describe the 3D presentation as immersive, but do not specify technical details beyond that. It is best understood as part of the film’s effort to make architectural space feel encountered, not as a guarantee of a particular viewing setup or effect.
Which buildings appear in the film?
The German Design Council names six projects featured in the documentary. This is a described selection, not necessarily a complete shot list.

The range—from a thermal bath and chapel to a museum, memorial, retreat and major art galleries—gives the film different kinds of spaces and users to observe. The German Design Council’s 24 August 2026 report lists these projects and says Wenders and Zumthor worked on the film for more than fourteen years. La Biennale’s catalogue likewise reports a duration of more than fourteen years; neither source gives an exact start and finish date.
What is known about the premiere and release?
La Biennale di Venezia lists the documentary in Venice Open, out of competition. The German Design Council had announced its world premiere for 6 September 2026 at the Venice Film Festival; that date has passed. For audiences elsewhere, release dates are territorial rather than universal: an AFP report carried by Gulf Today on 30 September said public release was set for November 2026, while Austrian distributor Polyfilm lists a cinema release on 26 November 2026.

The film’s close attention to how people encounter buildings fits the qualities AFP’s report associates with Zumthor: a preference for projects with a clear purpose, and an emphasis on craftsmanship, materials and context. AFP reported that he has kept his practice in Haldenstein and works with a team of around 20 or 30 at most; those are details from the report, not official practice figures.

At the Venice Film Festival, Zumthor told AFP, “I don’t like to be a star architect, I like to make these artistic buildings.” On the scale of his practice, he said, “I can only do what I can control. I can work with a team of 20, maybe 30 – that’s the maximum.” LACMA director Michael Govan recalled the decision to commission him this way: “Peter already had a reputation as being the slowest architect one could imagine.” Reflecting on the documentary’s personal character, Zumthor said, “It was more personal than I thought.” These remarks were reported by AFP via Gulf Today.
