No authoritative source we could find confirms that William Shatner has died. “William Shatner on the Death of William Shatner” is the title of an IGN item, not a report of a death. A June 6, 2024 Legion M shareholder update lists the piece as a press hit, but the update does not include the article’s text, date or quotations, so what the piece actually argues cannot be confirmed from that listing alone.
What the headline refers to
The exact title appears in a Legion M shareholder update dated June 6, 2024, where it is listed among press coverage of the company’s documentary. That listing is evidence that the IGN item existed under this headline. It is not evidence of what the article says. Any claim about its reporting, its context or any words attributed to Shatner should be checked against the original IGN article before it is repeated.

A headline built around the word “death” is not a death announcement. Titles of this kind are often about a persona, a career phase or a theme, and the documentary discussed below treats mortality as one of its subjects. Reading the title alone cannot tell you which of those readings applies.
What is and is not established
- Established: The exact title was listed in a Legion M shareholder update dated June 6, 2024, as an IGN press hit.
- Established: Legion M announced a Blu-ray and DVD release of the documentary William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill, with a July 30, 2024 release date. This is a historical announcement, not proof of current retail availability.
- Not established: The sources reviewed contain no authoritative death announcement and no reliable obituary.
- Not established: The text, publication date or direct quotations of the IGN item.
- Not established: Shatner’s current status. The sources reviewed do not confirm either that he has died or that he is alive.

The Mediamass death-hoax page
A Mediamass page dated September 16, 2026 describes a 2026 death claim about Shatner as a hoax. It is a single secondary outlet, not an official statement from Shatner, his representatives or a wire service. Its value is limited to showing that a death rumor circulated and was described as false by that outlet. It does not, on its own, establish Shatner’s present status.
Why a headline can look like a death report
Two things can happen at once: a headline with a death-related word circulates in aggregator roundups, and a rumor attaches itself to that headline. A roundup entry without a date, byline or link to the original article is the most common way that happens. When you see the phrase on its own, treat it as a pointer to an article you need to open, not as the news itself.

The documentary connected to the title
The documentary William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill is the clearest concrete product tied to this title. Legion M announced it on Blu-ray and DVD in June 2024, with a July 30, 2024 release date. Those dates describe the original announcement. The sources reviewed do not establish current stock, current sellers or whether either format is still in print.
A 2025 personal essay by TrekPhras(t)ik, published on Buttondown on October 23, 2025, reflects on the documentary and on death as a theme. It is commentary by an individual writer, not an official statement about Shatner’s health or status.

If you are looking for a copy, check these points before buying:
- Format: Blu-ray and DVD were both announced, so confirm which one a listing offers.
- Region compatibility: Check the disc’s region coding against your player before ordering from another country.
- Current availability: Confirm the listing is live and in stock. A 2024 announcement does not guarantee a 2026 listing.
- Seller: Prefer a seller you can verify, and compare its listing against the distributor’s own information where one exists.
How to check a celebrity death claim yourself
- Look for the claim from the person’s own verified channels or an official representative. A death claim that appears only in aggregators is not confirmed.
- Find at least two established news outlets that report the claim with a byline and a date of their own, not a link back to the same rumor.
- Open the original article from the publisher’s site rather than trusting a roundup, social post or search snippet. Check the byline, the date and whether the article quotes an identifiable source.
- Search the name together with “hoax” or “false” to see whether a fact-checking outlet has addressed the claim.
- Check the date. A headline from 2024 can resurface in 2026 with new commentary attached, and an old article does not describe current events.
Applied to this title, these checks produce the same result: the headline is documented, the documentary release is documented as an announcement, and no authoritative death report appears in the sources reviewed.

Where this leaves the question
The question “Has William Shatner died?” cannot be answered yes from the material available here. The phrase in the title is real, but it describes a published headline, and the sources that discuss death around it are either a roundup that does not reproduce the article or commentary and a hoax page from outside the subject’s own circle. If an official statement from Shatner or a reliable news organization appears, it should be treated as the authority over anything written here.
For the documentary itself, the useful reading is the film, not the headline. Its subject is a performer reflecting on his own life and mortality, and the release announcement and the 2025 essay are the most concrete records of how it has been received.
