The banter the title describes comes from a live stage show. William Shatner and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson performed a wide-ranging conversation called The Universe Is Absurd at Seattle’s McCaw Hall on June 18, 2025. Their later audio program, Cosmos Confidential: Bill & Neil’s Excellent Bromance, is a separate release. It is not a recording of the Seattle performance, so the two should be kept apart when you look for either one.
The Seattle show: The Universe Is Absurd
The event was billed as a conversation rather than a lecture. Reporting from Space.com described a performance of almost two hours that mixed personal stories, jokes, and discussion of science and life. Future of Space is identified as the producer and host. Space.com put attendance at nearly 3,000. That is a reporter’s approximate figure, not an audited ticket count, so treat it as an estimate of the room rather than a sold-out total.
The age figures reported for the night were Shatner at 94 and Tyson at 66. Those ages apply to June 2025 only.
The partnership itself began earlier. The pair first shared a stage of sorts on a space-themed Antarctic cruise the previous December, where their after-dinner conversation drew a crowd of fellow passengers. The Seattle event grew out of that exchange, which is why the show feels like an extended dinner-table argument rather than a rehearsed presentation.

What they talked about
Coverage of the Seattle conversation names a broad set of subjects: quantum physics, penguin behavior, Pluto, spaceflight, mortality, and Shatner’s reaction to seeing Earth from space. The show also drew on Shatner’s Star Trek persona and Tyson’s work as a science communicator, but it spent much of its energy on the two men’s personal histories and their different ways of facing the unknown.
The teasing was part of the format, not an interruption of it. Shatner recounted early acting jobs that put him in grim lodging. Tyson asked what “fetid” meant, and Shatner supplied the punchline. Tyson also described his film cameo appearances, which Shatner mocked. The count of six feature-film cameos was reported as part of that banter. It was not independently checked against a filmography.
The most reflective moments came from Shatner’s spaceflight. Reporting from GeekWire quoted him on his Blue Origin flight:
“I bawled my head off, and I realized I was in mourning for our Earth. And that’s what my flight did for me.”

Before the event, Tyson described the collaboration in simpler terms, calling it “a conversation that explores life.” That phrase is a fair summary of how the Seattle show was pitched.
Why the pairing works: two ways of facing the unknown
The appeal rests on the contrast between the two speakers. Shatner tends to ask probing and sometimes speculative questions. Tyson answers by marking where the evidence stops. In a November 2025 CBS News interview, Tyson put it this way:
“No, as a scientist, you need to be comfortable in the presence of a question that does not yet have an answer.”
The same interview captured his shorter, more characteristic response to a question that has no settled answer: “We don’t know. Next question!”

That exchange shows the dynamic at its best. Shatner brings the imaginative leap, and Tyson brings the reminder of uncertainty. The jokes keep either approach from becoming a lecture.

The later program is an audiobook-format original. Tyson’s official page describes it as an unscripted conversation recorded in Shatner’s Los Angeles backyard. It is not a transcript of the Seattle show, and listeners should not expect the stage material.
The publisher’s description lists broader themes for the recording: the pursuit of knowledge, personal experiences of social bias, black holes, the behavior of light, quantum physics, the universe, and spirituality. Those themes describe the recording as the publisher presents it. They are not confirmed as topics of the Seattle stage show.

Where to listen, read, and see them next
- Listening: Cosmos Confidential is available as an audiobook. Blackstone Publishing’s page lists Amazon and Audible among retailers. It is an audio product, not a physical book.
- Reading: Tyson’s Merlin’s Tour of the Universe is related astronomy reading. GeekWire’s June 2025 report identifies it as his first book and says it was recently revised and re-released. It is not a companion or transcript of the show. Confirm the current edition and format before you buy.
- Live: A May 2026 local report noted a Shatner–Tyson appearance at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles. The reporting does not establish current dates or ticket availability, so check with the venue directly before making plans.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The Seattle show and the Los Angeles audio recording are the two confirmed releases in this pairing, and both are documented by the sources cited above. The attendance figure, the age figures, and the cameo count are useful as reported details, but none of them has been audited. The subjects listed for the audio original describe its scope as the publisher states it, and they should not be read as a list of what happened on stage in Seattle.
