William Russell, the actor who played schoolteacher Ian Chesterton in the early years of Doctor Who, has died aged 99, BBC News reported in June 2024. The report does not give a cause of death or an exact date, and this article does not supply either. Russell was one of the four original cast members of the series, and his Ian was one of the first people viewers saw step aboard the TARDIS.

Why Ian Chesterton mattered in the first episodes

The series opens with two schoolteachers, Ian and Barbara, drawn into a mystery involving their pupil Susan. The official Doctor Who tribute, published on 10 June 2024, states that Ian and fellow schoolteacher Barbara were the first companions audiences saw board the TARDIS in the first episode. For a show that would go on to build its identity around travelling companions, that opening choice set the pattern from the start.

An ordinary man facing an unusual Doctor

In the first episode Ian meets the Doctor, played by William Hartnell. BBC News notes that Ian mistakenly calls him “Doctor Foreman,” which prompts the Doctor’s “Doctor Who?” reply. The official tribute, quoting executive producer Phil Collinson, describes the pairing this way:

“William Russell’s portrayal as Ian Chesterton was a perfect foil to William Hartnell’s sometimes cool and aloof doctor.”

The contrast mattered because Hartnell’s Doctor was often unwelcoming, and Ian’s practical, sceptical reactions gave viewers someone to stand beside them.

A template for the companions who followed

Collinson credited Russell’s Ian with helping to establish the pattern for the companions who came after him. The same tribute continues: “Ian was warm and funny but also brave and utterly fearless.” Words such as “first companions” and “template” are the tribute’s own interpretations rather than an official ranking of the series’ companions, so they are best read as an informed fan-and-production view of Ian’s place in the show’s history.

Leaving the show in 1965

Russell played Ian through the first two series and departed in 1965, according to BBC News. The Guardian’s obituary places him in the original cast and in the programme’s 1963 debut, and gives fuller career context than a short news report can.

His career beyond the TARDIS

BBC News lists several other credits from across his career:

  • The Adventures of Sir Lancelot
  • Coronation Street
  • The Great Escape
  • Superman

Those titles show an actor who worked across British television and international film, but Doctor Who remained the role most closely associated with him.

Audio work and a return in 2022

Narrating Doctor Who audiobooks in the 1990s

BBC News reports that Russell later narrated a number of Doctor Who audiobooks in the 1990s. Big Finish Productions, the audio company, published its own tribute titled “William Russell 1924-2024,” covering his work in Doctor Who and in its audio productions. Because it is the company’s account of its own releases, it is best read as a record of his involvement rather than an independent critical assessment.

The Power of the Doctor, 2022

Russell returned briefly as Ian in 2022, appearing in a cameo in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode, The Power of the Doctor. The appearance gave the programme a link back to its first companions more than half a century after Russell’s original run had ended.

Tributes from the production

BBC News quoted Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies describing Russell as “a fine, nimble, witty, heartfelt actor who absolutely sold the truth of those early years.” The report attributes this to Davies’s Instagram tribute, not to an official BBC statement. The official Doctor Who tribute gathers memories from cast and crew and includes a dedication note relating to the episode “Rogue.”

Watching his original run on DVD

For readers who want to revisit classic Doctor Who, the BBC Shop US lists Doctor Who: The Space Museum / The Chase as a three-disc Region 1 DVD. The listing does not mention Russell or promise a Russell-focused release, so check the serial details before buying. Region 1 discs are designed for players sold in North America, so viewers elsewhere will need a region-free player or an alternative edition. Stock, pricing and regional availability can change, so confirm them on the listing before ordering.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
