William H. Macy says that eleven years on Shameless taught him how to act, and that the long run let him shed habits and baggage he had been carrying for much of his career. In a Collider interview published November 27, 2025, he put it in two short phrases: “I stripped down” and “I should have done it years ago.” The interview, conducted with Kerry Condon while promoting Netflix’s Train Dreams, touches on the long TV run only briefly, but the remarks are specific enough to be worth unpacking.

What Macy actually said

The headline of the Collider piece, “William H. Macy Opens Up About His ‘Shameless’ Decade: ‘I Gave Up a Lot of Stuff,'” is the most quoted line from the conversation, and it is worth reading as a statement about process rather than nostalgia. Macy, who played Frank Gallagher on the series, framed the eleven years as a kind of apprenticeship. In paraphrase reported by Collider, the run is where he really learned the craft, and it is where he accumulated the experience he later calls his 10,000 hours.

Two short quotations are reported verbatim in Collider’s coverage:

  • “I stripped down.”
  • “I should have done it years ago.”

Those lines are the core of the interview. Read them alongside the headline and the picture is consistent: Macy describes a long stretch of working on a series as a period in which he stopped relying on technique and habit, and he regrets not making that change sooner. The regret is the more interesting half. He is not saying the years were wasted; he is saying the lesson arrived later than it could have.

Why a long-running series can work as training

A network or streaming series of more than a decade gives an actor something a film shoot rarely does: the same character, the same crew, and hundreds of scenes to test an approach. A two-hour film compresses the work into a few months and then ends. A series asks the performer to return to the character week after week, and over time the routines that got them hired can harden into tics. Macy’s language suggests that the value of Shameless was not only the experience of working constantly, but the chance to strip away what he had been doing out of habit and find what the character actually needed.

That reading is an interpretation of his remarks, not a claim Collider makes in those words. What the interview supports is narrower: Macy credits the long run with teaching him how to act, and he describes shedding things he had been carrying around.

The 10,000 hours idea

Macy invokes the figure of 10,000 hours, the popular shorthand for deliberate practice associated with the psychologist K. Anders Ericsson and later popularized in writing about expertise. In the interview it functions as his own rhetorical measure of how much real work the series gave him, not as a study or a measured result. It is worth keeping that distinction clear. No figure in the reporting measures how many hours he logged on set, and the number should be read as a way of describing the scale of the commitment rather than a precise count.

The Train Dreams context

The conversation was not primarily about Shameless. Macy and Condon were discussing Train Dreams, the Netflix film, and the moment each knew the adaptation would be special. According to Collider’s summary, Macy called the script stunning and described it as the movie itself. Condon noted that the makeup artist from Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri worked on this film too, which made the shoot a reunion of sorts. Collider’s coverage also reports that Macy talked about his character’s death scene, saying the scene is less about dying than about communicating. Those points are paraphrased in reporting rather than quoted in full, so they should be treated as the outlet’s account of the conversation.

Collider’s summary describes a career-best performance from Joel Edgerton and an ensemble cast. That praise comes from the outlet’s description of the film, not from Macy.

What the interview does and does not establish

The Collider piece is the only primary source behind these remarks, and it reaches readers through a headline, a short set of quotations and a summary of the wider conversation. Macy’s core claim is clear: Shameless was where his acting education happened, and he wishes he had let go of his old habits earlier. What is not established here is how the eleven years broke down in practice, which techniques he dropped, or which scenes marked the change. For those details, the full Collider interview, published November 27, 2025 and bylined to Tamera Jones and Steven Weintraub, is the place to read the context around each quotation.

Rank #4

For readers interested in the craft beyond this interview, the useful question is the one Macy’s remarks raise: how a long-running series can either harden an actor’s habits or, as he describes, become the place where they are finally tested and dropped.
