No official source establishes that The Simpsons ends at Season 40, and none gives a final-episode date. What is confirmed is a renewal: FOX announced in April 2025 that it had committed to four more seasons, Seasons 37 through 40, running through the 2028–29 broadcast cycle. Season 40 is the last season named in that commitment, but the renewal describes how far the show is secured, not when it stops. The “Season 40 ending” idea comes mostly from a cast member’s personal prediction, which is not a studio decision.

What FOX has officially confirmed

On April 2, 2025, FOX Corporation announced a deal with Disney Television Studios that named Seasons 37 through 40 of The Simpsons and said the commitment continued through the 2028–29 broadcast cycle. The announcement is the basis for every date-related claim below. It sets a floor for the show’s run, not a ceiling.

Season What the official sources say Source
Season 37 Began in fall 2025, according to FOX’s fall 2025 schedule announcement FOX Corporation, fall 2025 schedule
Season 38 Listed as returning in FOX’s 2026–27 schedule FOX Corporation, 2026–27 schedule
Season 39 Covered by the April 2025 renewal; no premiere date stated in the sources FOX Corporation, April 2025 renewal
Season 40 Covered by the April 2025 renewal as the final named season; no premiere or final-episode date stated FOX Corporation, April 2025 renewal

The 2028–29 wording is a broadcast-cycle window. It does not identify a specific airdate, and it does not say whether FOX will order seasons after 40.

The 800th episode and what it does not tell you

FOX’s fall 2025 schedule announcement anticipated that The Simpsons would reach its 800th episode in 2026. TheWrap later reported that Season 37, Episode 14, “Irrational Treasure,” was that episode. A milestone like this is often read as a sign of an approaching end, but in this case the official materials treat it only as a count, not a countdown.

Streaming news is not a renewal signal

Disney+ announced on May 28, 2026 three all-new exclusive episodes streaming in summer 2026, and said its collection included all 36 seasons, the first movie, and shorts. That confirms the show’s distribution is active. It says nothing about whether FOX will commission seasons beyond 40, because streaming catalogs and broadcast commissions are separate decisions.

Nancy Cartwright’s Season 40 prediction

Nancy Cartwright, who voices Bart Simpson, answered “40 [seasons]” when asked how long she thought the show would run. When pressed, she described it as “my opinion.” TheWrap’s August 2026 report says a spokesperson for The Simpsons and 20th Television declined to comment. Cartwright’s remark is a cast member’s forecast. It should not be read as a decision by FOX or the studio, and the reporting does not show any official response to it.

What showrunner Matt Selman has said about an ending

Showrunner Matt Selman told TheWrap in February 2026 that the series would not have a traditional finale. In his words: “If the show ever did end, there’s no finale, it would just be a regular episode that has the family in it. Probably a little Easter egg here and there, but no ‘I’m going to miss this place.’”

He also described the show’s structure: “The show isn’t supposed to change. The characters reset every week. It’s like Groundhog Day but they don’t know it — and they don’t die that much.”

These comments describe creative intent for how an ending would be handled. They are not a cancellation notice and do not set a date.

How to tell whether an end has actually been announced

Watch for these official signals rather than cast interviews or fan speculation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A FOX schedule announcement that stops listing The Simpsons for a season the company has already committed to.
  • A FOX or studio statement that names a final season or a final episode.
  • A new renewal that extends past the 2028–29 broadcast cycle, which would move the horizon further out.
  • A statement from the studio or network, rather than a cast or crew member, that addresses the show’s end.

The official sources available as of this writing contain none of these signals about a Season 40 ending. The FOX schedule for 2026–27 still lists Season 38.
