Will Shannon Sharpe Be Fired by ESPN After the Instagram Live Incident?

The Instagram Live stream did not lead to an announced firing. ESPN said in September 2024 that Sharpe would keep appearing; AP reported in July 2025, citing an anonymous source, that he would not return after a separate lawsuit and leave.

No reporting we could find shows that the Instagram Live stream got Shannon Sharpe fired. ESPN’s documented response to the stream, in September 2024, was that he would continue to appear on the network. His exit came later, after a separate civil lawsuit and a temporary leave. In July 2025, the Associated Press reported, citing an anonymous person with knowledge of the decision, that Sharpe would not return to ESPN. The network had not announced that decision publicly.

Timeline at a glance

The livestream and the departure are separate events, months apart, and they rest on different kinds of sourcing. The table separates what each report establishes from what it does not.

Date What happened Attribution What it does and does not establish
September 10–13, 2024 Sharpe’s Instagram account livestreamed video that included audio of a sexual encounter. PolitiFact fact-check, September 13, 2024 Establishes the stream and Sharpe’s apology. He described the stream as an accident.
September 13, 2024 ESPN told PolitiFact that Sharpe would continue to appear as normally scheduled. ESPN spokesperson, as quoted by PolitiFact Establishes ESPN’s response at that time. It is not a statement about later decisions.
April 24, 2025 After a civil lawsuit was filed in Nevada, Sharpe stepped away temporarily from his ESPN duties and said he planned to return at the start of NFL preseason. ESPN News Services Establishes a temporary leave. ESPN said it agreed with his decision. It does not establish a permanent separation.
July 18, 2025 The plaintiff’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, said the lawsuit had been resolved and would be dismissed with prejudice. No details were released. Associated Press Establishes that the case was resolved. It is not a ruling on the allegations.
July 30, 2025 AP reported that Sharpe would not return to ESPN. His last appearance had been in late April. Associated Press, citing an anonymous person with knowledge of the decision Establishes a reported decision. ESPN had not announced it publicly when AP reported it.

What ESPN said after the livestream

The clearest on-the-record ESPN statement about the Instagram Live incident is from September 2024. Sharpe said the stream was an accident, apologized, and said he had spoken with the network. ESPN then told PolitiFact that he would keep appearing as normally scheduled. That is the most direct answer to the question of whether the stream itself cost him his job: at the time, the network’s position was that he stayed on air.

Claims that “ESPN has fired Shannon Sharpe” circulate in the fact-check record and on social media. Those claims trace to later events, not to the 2024 response, and they should be read as a dated claim rather than a current one.

The 2025 leave and lawsuit

The next major development came in April 2025, after a civil lawsuit was filed in Nevada. Sharpe announced that he was stepping aside temporarily. His statement read: “At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties.” ESPN responded: “This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon’s decision to step away.”

The lawsuit is a separate matter from the livestream. The complaint, as reported, alleges that Sharpe went live on Instagram while having sex with another woman. These are allegations made in a filing, not findings. Sharpe has called the allegations “false and disruptive,” according to AP. The case was resolved in July 2025, and no settlement terms were made public. A resolution of this kind does not establish whether the allegations are true or false.

The July 2025 report

On July 30, 2025, AP reported that Sharpe would not return to ESPN. The report relied on an anonymous person with knowledge of the decision. AP also said the decision had not been announced publicly. The reporting does not give ESPN’s reasons, and no on-record ESPN statement in the material we reviewed explains the decision.

The timing invites an obvious inference, but the sources do not support it. The livestream was in September 2024, the network said he would stay, and the departure report came after the lawsuit and the leave. Any reading that ties the 2025 decision to the livestream alone goes beyond what has been reported.

Distinguishing the three possible outcomes

Coverage of this story often blurs three different situations. They are not interchangeable:

  • A temporary step-away. Sharpe announced this in April 2025, with an expected return for NFL preseason. ESPN publicly supported the decision.
  • A reported decision not to return. AP reported this in July 2025, based on an anonymous source. It is a report, not an on-record announcement.
  • A public firing announcement. None of the reporting we reviewed describes a public firing announcement by ESPN.

Current status

The most recent reporting we could confirm is AP’s July 30, 2025 report. We did not find a later public confirmation of Sharpe’s status with ESPN as of this article’s date. Anyone checking this question should look for newer statements from ESPN or from Sharpe, since a status can change after a report like this one.
