Will & Harper is a warm, often funny road-trip documentary about a friendship adapting to change. After longtime friend Harper Steele comes out as a trans woman, Will Ferrell joins her on a cross-country drive that makes room for both comic detours and frank conversations about transition, safety, and belonging. Its intimacy is its strength—and its limits: this is one friendship and one woman’s experience, not a general guide to transgender life.
What is Will & Harper about?
Directed by Josh Greenbaum, the 2024 documentary follows Ferrell and Steele as they travel across the United States after Steele comes out as a trans woman. Netflix’s official logline calls the film “an intimate portrait of friendship, transition, and America” (Netflix Tudum). The trip gives the longtime friends a way to navigate a new stage in their relationship while Steele reconnects with a country she loves and considers how safe it feels to move through it.

The two met at Saturday Night Live in 1995, according to TIME’s September 2024 interview. That history matters: the film is not built around strangers meeting for the camera, but around two people who already share a language, a backlog of jokes, and years of affection. The road trip puts that familiarity under new pressure without pretending it can answer every question either of them faces.
How does the friendship shape the film?
Ferrell and Steele’s rapport is the documentary’s narrative engine. Their comic exchanges make the drive feel lived-in rather than solemn, while their conversations reveal the awkwardness and care involved in learning how a close friendship changes after a major personal disclosure. Humor is not an escape hatch from the serious material; it is part of how these friends communicate. Steele puts it simply in the TIME interview: “Comedy is my language of love.”

That closeness also gives the film a particular point of view. We see Steele through her own presence and through a friend who is trying to understand and support her, rather than through a detached explanatory framework. This makes the documentary emotionally accessible, but it also means its perspective is necessarily specific. A viewer should not mistake one road trip or one friendship for a comprehensive account of trans lives.
Does the road-trip format work?
The cross-country structure gives the film a natural rhythm: the friends travel, encounter different settings, and return to the conversations that brought them on the road. TIME describes stops in Iowa, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. The changing locations provide context for Steele’s concerns about safety and belonging, while the steady presence of the car keeps the story centered on the pair rather than turning it into a broad survey of the country.

The journey is most effective when its two modes—comic friendship and serious discussion—remain in conversation. A joke can ease the way into a difficult subject; a candid exchange can then make the stakes of the trip clear. The film’s road-movie shape offers room for that alternation, though it is still a curated journey, not a systematic portrait of every place or experience the pair might have encountered.
How does the film balance comedy and serious conversations?
Greenbaum has said the filmmakers wanted levity alongside pain, struggle, and discomfort. Netflix Tudum reproduces his explanation: “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” The idea fits the film’s most distinctive quality: it lets affectionate humor coexist with moments that are vulnerable or unsettling, instead of treating laughter as proof that the hard parts are over.

That balance will not feel equally persuasive to every viewer. The film’s accessible, feel-good tone can make difficult material easier to approach, but it may also leave some viewers wanting a less polished or wider-ranging account. Rotten Tomatoes’ page includes both descriptions of the documentary as breezy and affirming and an individual audience response calling it “too safe, clean and staged.” Those are examples of reactions, not a representative survey; they point to a real question of emphasis rather than settling it.

For viewers interested in an intimate documentary about friendship, the film’s combination of easy chemistry and honest conversation is its main appeal. Ferrell is not simply a comic foil, and Steele is not reduced to a subject for him to discover: the story depends on their shared history and on Steele’s own reasons for taking the trip. The result is more personal than comprehensive, which is both its emotional advantage and its boundary.
