Will & Harper follows longtime friends Will Ferrell and Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip after Steele comes out as a trans woman. Directed by Josh Greenbaum, the documentary uses their conversations and encounters along the way to explore friendship, transition and the country Steele loves.
What is Will & Harper about?
Ferrell and Steele met while working at Saturday Night Live and continued collaborating after their time on the show. Steele later became its head writer and worked with Ferrell on projects including Casa de mi Padre and A Deadly Adoption. Netflix describes Steele as Ferrell’s close friend of 30 years.
The film follows the pair as they travel across the United States after Steele comes out. The road trip gives them time to talk through a new stage in their friendship and revisit places Steele values. Netflix frames it as a chance for Steele to reconnect with the country she loves as herself. Netflix’s film guide describes the documentary and its journey.
How does the documentary balance comedy and serious moments?
Humor is part of the friends’ shared language, but it does not make the conversations easy or the journey uniformly welcoming. Director Josh Greenbaum has described exchanges that moved from a joke to a sincere question and back to comedy. Steele has said, “Comedy is my language of love,” and Greenbaum’s director’s statement says, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

The film also includes difficult encounters: TIME reports that the friends faced hostility at a steakhouse in Amarillo and that the documentary includes transphobic attacks on social media. Its warmth comes alongside those moments, rather than erasing them. TIME’s interview with Ferrell and Steele discusses the film and its limits.
Is Will & Harper a representation of all trans people?
No. Steele has cautioned against treating the documentary as representative of all trans people, pointing to differences in race, class and background. She has described its value instead in showing the conversations people can have with queer relatives. It is one person’s story and a portrait of a particular friendship, not a comprehensive account of trans lives.
