Wild Mermaids, Catherine Young’s short documentary about a women’s ocean-swimming group in Gnarabup, was named a finalist in CinefestOZ 2026’s CineWest Best WA Short Film category. The festival also included it in its South West regional program. Its listed Margaret River screening took place on 29 August 2026; current streaming or home-viewing availability has not been established.
What is Wild Mermaids about?
The documentary follows the Mermaids, a women’s ocean-swimming group in Gnarabup on Western Australia’s South West coast. As the group prepares to say goodbye to a member named Nikol, the women reflect on how their recurring swims and friendships have shaped their lives. FilmInk describes the story as one of connection, resilience and joy, with Gnarabup Beach as its setting.
Director Catherine Young has described the film as personal: in her filmmaker statement on the FilmFreeway listing, she says her own relationship with the ocean and the welcome she received from the group after arriving in Margaret River helped inspire it. The documentary presents cold-water swimming as part of these women’s shared experience; the sources do not establish broader health effects.
FilmInk quotes Young describing the film as being about “finding connection in unexpected places,” with the ocean as its setting and friendship at its heart. It also quotes Cate, identified as a long-standing Mermaid, describing the group’s shared experience as a source of joy and play.
