The available evidence does not establish a reliable list of four famous Wigan Athletic supporters—and it does not show that musician Richard Ashcroft is one of them. It does show that Ashcroft is closely connected to Wigan as his hometown. Those are different claims: being from Wigan, appearing at a local venue or mentioning a stadium does not prove support for the football club.
Is Richard Ashcroft a Wigan Athletic supporter?
Not on the evidence available here. Local and broadcast reports establish Ashcroft’s strong connection to Wigan, but none documents him saying he supports Wigan Athletic or shows a pattern of attending the club’s matches.
In an April 2024 interview with ITV News Granada, Ashcroft said that when people ask where he is from, he answers: “a town called Wigan not far from Manchester and Liverpool.” ITV’s report placed his return in the context of The Verve’s 1998 Haigh Hall performance, which drew 33,000 people. The concert and audience figure establish a musical connection to the town, not allegiance to its football club.
What the 2024 homecoming shows—and what it does not
Ashcroft returned to Wigan for two concerts at Robin Park Arena in July 2024, more than 25 years after The Verve played Haigh Hall. Wigan Council’s Borough Life described the shows as a return to his hometown. ITV reported that the first Robin Park concert sold out in less than 24 hours, prompting an additional date; its post-event report said both shows sold out and put the Saturday crowd above 13,000.

After the concerts, Ashcroft told ITV: “These two days have been some of the greatest of my musical career, I am so happy to be back home.” ITV also reported that he referenced a future performance at the stadium associated with Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors. A comment about a venue does not identify which club, if either, he supports. The reports establish a celebrated hometown return, not football fandom.
Why a list of four celebrity supporters is not substantiated
A credible list needs evidence that each person supports Wigan Athletic specifically. The available material does not identify four celebrities meeting that standard, and it provides no basis for ranking them by fame. In particular, it would be misleading to turn Ashcroft’s birthplace, hometown concerts or stadium reference into proof that he is a Latics supporter.

- Being from Wigan establishes a hometown connection, not support for a football club.
- Appearing at a local venue establishes a performance connection, not regular attendance at matches.
- Mentioning a stadium does not show support for Wigan Athletic, especially when the venue is associated with more than one local club.
- Evidence of support would be stronger if it included a direct statement, repeated documented attendance or reliable independent reporting—and clearly referred to Wigan Athletic.
The distinction matters in Wigan, where the stadium mentioned in the ITV report is associated with both Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors. Support for the town, a venue or another local team cannot be silently recast as support for the Latics.

For a football-specific connection, the official Wigan Athletic Supporters Club records the club’s 2012–13 FA Cup win on its WAFC Info page. That achievement is documented club history; it does not establish which celebrities support the team.
