Why Your YouTube Radio Livestream Shows Offline After Reconnecting

A reconnect does not prove YouTube is receiving your stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, active/inactive status, health messages, encoder destination, and scheduled settings.

If your YouTube radio livestream still shows offline after an encoder or network reconnects, first check whether YouTube is receiving a feed—not just whether your encoder says it has reconnected. In Live Control Room, inspect the preview and stream-health messages, then verify the encoder’s destination URL and stream key. YouTube’s stream status uses active for incoming data and inactive when data is not arriving; those checks help narrow the problem, but no single reconnect fix is guaranteed.

What “offline” can—and cannot—tell you

An offline indicator alone does not identify the cause. An encoder may reconnect to a network without successfully sending data to the intended YouTube stream, or the stream may be configured but not currently receiving a feed. YouTube’s API distinguishes these states: active means its backend is receiving stream data, while inactive means it is not. Check the incoming feed and its health before concluding that the viewer-facing status has one particular explanation. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams

Diagnose the feed in Live Control Room

  1. Open the event’s Live Control Room. Look at the preview and read the stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event; the preview helps confirm whether video is reaching YouTube. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  2. Check whether data is arriving. If the stream is reported as inactive, YouTube is not receiving data at that moment. If it is active, data is arriving, but that does not by itself establish that every part of the broadcast is healthy. Review any health messages as well. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
  3. Verify the encoder destination and stream key. Confirm that the encoder is pointed at the intended YouTube stream URL and uses the key associated with that stream. YouTube describes the key as the identifier that connects the encoder’s feed to the stream. If you replace or reset the key in Live Control Room, update the encoder with the new key too. Connect streaming software to go live
  4. Check the encoder’s own output. Confirm that it is still running and attempting to send the stream after reconnecting. A restored network connection is not proof that the encoder is sending to the right destination or that YouTube is receiving the feed.
  5. Compare configured quality with available upload capacity. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that your connection can reliably support, checking upload bitrate, and testing before going live. Its encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate settings appropriate to your encoder and connection rather than increasing quality as a troubleshooting shortcut. Check scheduled-stream behavior

If this is a scheduled encoder-based event, check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled and whether the encoder is still sending a feed. Those settings can be copied when reusing stream settings, so confirm that the current event has the behavior you expect. Connect streaming software to go live

Use the status to choose your next check

What you see What it establishes What to check next
YouTube reports inactive YouTube is not receiving stream data. Check that the encoder is sending, and verify the destination URL, stream key, and network connection.
YouTube reports active, but health messages show a problem Data is arriving, but YouTube has detected an issue. Use the health messages and review bitrate, connection capacity, and encoder settings.
YouTube reports active and the preview is receiving a feed, but the event still appears offline to viewers The encoder-to-YouTube feed is arriving; the status discrepancy is not explained by feed absence alone. Recheck the event and scheduled-stream configuration in Live Control Room. The available official guidance does not identify one universal cause for this particular display state.

What to do if it remains offline

Do not treat resetting the key, restarting the encoder, or creating a new broadcast as a guaranteed fix. The right next step depends on whether YouTube receives data, what its health messages say, which encoder is in use, and how the event is configured. Record the exact status and health message, whether the preview shows the incoming feed, whether the event is scheduled, and what the encoder reports after reconnecting. Those details make it possible to narrow the diagnosis instead of repeating an action that may not address the cause.
