Spoilers for Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12, “Counting Coup.” Colby Mayfield dies after risking his life to save Carter from an unruly horse. The episode portrays his death as a sudden ranch accident—not a targeted killing or an act tied to the Duttons’ land conflict. Executive producer and director Christina Voros said the scene’s impact comes from its simplicity and the split-second dangers of working with animals.
How Colby dies in “Counting Coup”
Carter is dealing with an unruly horse after its water is knocked over. The horse corners him, and Colby rushes in to get him out. Colby saves Carter, but the horse fatally kicks or tramples him. The episode’s sequence is recapped by TheWrap.
Colby is not killed in the season’s political or land-related violence. The immediate cause is a dangerous encounter with a horse at work. The abruptness makes the loss especially painful: Colby has just been shown close to Teeter, and his death affects the ranch hands, Carter and Beth.
Why the show chose this kind of death
The clearest public explanation comes from Christina Voros, an executive producer and director on Yellowstone. As quoted by Men’s Health, reporting her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Voros said: “In a season where there are all these twists and turns and dark forces and giant narrative swings, Colby’s death is so powerful because it’s so simple.”

Voros also connected the scene to the risk of cowboy work: “For anyone who really understands the lifestyle of cowboys and working with animals and the risks of the jobs—and Rip says it about himself—it’s a dangerous job, and this kind of thing happens and it happens in a split-second.” Her explanation frames Colby’s death as an ordinary occupational danger turning fatal, rather than a hidden plot against him.
What Denim Richards said about leaving
Denim Richards, who played Colby, told TheWrap that he learned in May that he was leaving the show. He described the actor’s job this way: “our job is to service the story.” That offers context about how he approached the news; it does not establish that he requested an exit or explain the writers’ internal decision-making.

Was Colby’s death connected to a feud or spin-off?
The cited account of the episode and Voros’s explanation support an accidental death rooted in the danger of working with animals. Richards’s interview does not verify rumors of a personal dispute with Taylor Sheridan, an actor-requested departure, or a spin-off decision that dictated Colby’s fate. Those claims should not be treated as established explanations.
