What set the breakup in motion?
The story’s first clear fault line involved Liv Morgan, Dominik Mysterio, and Rhea Ripley. On July 8, 2024, WWE’s Raw recap reported that Morgan and Dominik teamed against Rey Mysterio and Zelina Vega, with Morgan helping Dominik win. Ripley returned after the match. The sequence established Morgan and Dominik as an emerging pair before Ripley had to confront what their alignment meant.
A second tension developed between Finn Bálor and Damian Priest. On July 29, Bálor refused help from Judgment Day during his match with Gunther. After Bálor lost, Priest stepped in when Gunther continued the attack. WWE’s recap made the relationship legible as complicated: Bálor was pulling away, but Priest still showed concern for him.
How did WWE make the sides clear?
WWE’s Aug. 26 preview described Judgment Day attacking former allies Priest and Ripley on Aug. 19. The following Raw, Priest and Ripley confronted the faction after its victory and sent a message ahead of their mixed tag match against Morgan and Dominik at Bash in Berlin, as reported in the Aug. 26 recap.

That pairing made the emotional divide easy to follow in the ring: Ripley and Priest were now aligned against the people whose actions had made the split personal. Rather than leaving the breakup as a roster change or an ambiguous backstage dispute, WWE gave viewers an immediate contest with the opposing relationships represented on each side.
Why did the breakup feel earned?
The setup came before the rupture
Morgan and Dominik’s alliance appeared before Ripley’s return, while Bálor’s refusal of help and Priest’s intervention showed strain without erasing their bond. Those earlier choices gave the later fractures context. The breakup therefore read less like a sudden lineup change and more like consequences catching up with relationships already in motion.

Two rivalries carried the story
Ripley’s conflict with Morgan gave the breakup a direct betrayal to answer; Priest’s conflict with Bálor supplied a parallel split within the faction. The July 29 recap showed the complicated Priest–Bálor connection, and WWE’s later recaps carried the former allies’ conflict into matches and attacks. With two tracks, the story did not have to rely on a single confrontation to sustain interest.
The payoff arrived quickly
The Aug. 19 attack was followed by the Aug. 26 confrontation and a mixed tag match at Bash in Berlin. On Sept. 2, Ripley joined Priest and Jey Uso in a win against Bálor and JD McDonagh, making the new sides visible in another match, according to WWE’s recap. The conflict moved from betrayal to clear in-ring consequences without a long stretch in which the new alignments were hard to read.

Did the split keep mattering afterward?
Yes: WWE’s Sept. 16 recap reported that Priest defeated Dominik, Ripley speared Morgan, and Judgment Day attacked Priest and Ripley after the match. The faction remained an active opposing force after the former allies separated, so the breakup continued to generate television action instead of ending with the initial expulsion and reveal.

The case for calling the breakup perfect rests on four storytelling measures: setup, clarity, speed of payoff, and continued consequences. On those measures, the documented sequence is strong: tensions were shown first, the new pairings were apparent, WWE quickly put them into matches, and the conflict remained active afterward. The official recaps establish what happened; they do not establish audience consensus or confirm the creative intent behind the story.
