The Catcher in the Rye was challenged for different reasons in different places: objections included profanity, sexual references, claims of obscenity, and allegations that the novel undermined morality or was blasphemous. Some challengers also called it “anti-white.” There was no single nationwide ban: school boards and officials refused some requests, removed the book in other cases, and later reversed or limited some decisions.
Why did people object to the novel?
The American Library Association’s historical list records complaints about language and profanity, sexual references or situations, obscenity, morality, and religion. It also records a Columbus, Ohio, request describing the novel as “anti-white.” These are the stated objections of complainants or decision-makers, not neutral findings about the book.
The reasons varied by case. In 1992, objections in Waterloo, Iowa, and Duval County, Florida, included profanity and sexual passages, as well as statements said to defame minorities, God, women, and disabled people. In 1988, a challenge in Linton-Stockton, Indiana, alleged that the book was “blasphemous and undermines morality.” In other cases, the focus was more narrowly on profanity or sexual content.
What happened in specific challenges?
The historical record shows different actions and outcomes; “challenged” does not automatically mean the book was removed. The ALA list, hosted by Fort Bragg Library, identifies the following episodes:

| Year and place | Reported objection or action | Outcome recorded |
|---|---|---|
| 1960, Tulsa, Oklahoma | A teacher was fired after assigning the novel to an eleventh-grade English class. | The teacher was reinstated on appeal, but the book was removed from school use. |
| 1963, Columbus, Ohio | Parents asked the school board to ban the novel as “anti-white” and “obscene.” | The board refused the request. |
| 1975, Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania | Parent objections to language and content preceded a 5–4 vote to remove the book from a suggested-reading list. | The book was later restored to the curriculum after the board learned a two-thirds vote was required. |
| 1982, Morris, Manitoba | The book was removed with two others under a committee guideline addressing “excess vulgar language,” sexual scenes, moral issues, violence, and the occult. | The list records removal. This was a Canadian case, not a U.S. school case. |
| 1986, Medicine Bow, Wyoming | Sexual references and profanity were cited in connection with removal from a required-reading list. | Removed from the list. |
| 1988, Linton-Stockton, Indiana | The challenge alleged the book was “blasphemous and undermines morality.” | The list records the allegation but does not state an outcome. |
| 1992, Waterloo, Iowa, and Duval County, Florida | Objections included profanity, sexual passages, and statements said to defame several groups and figures. | The list records the objections but does not specify an outcome for these entries. |
| 1997, Marysville, California | The novel was removed from required reading because of profanity and sexual situations. | The list records removal and quotes the superintendent saying he wanted it “out of the way so that we didn’t have that polarization over a book.” |
| 2000, Windsor Forest High School, Savannah, Georgia | A parent complained about sex, violence, and profanity in an AP English class. | The ban was later reversed after community protests. |
| 2001, Summerville, South Carolina | A school board member removed the book, calling it “a filthy, filthy book.” | The list records removal. |
The list is a historical compilation rather than a set of original district records, so its entries should be read as reported summaries of particular episodes—not as evidence that every district acted for the same reason or that every restriction lasted.
What does “banned” mean here?
The ALA distinguishes a challenge from a ban. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict access to a library resource because of an objection. It may end with the material retained, access restricted, or the item withdrawn. A ban, in the ALA’s definition, is complete removal from a collection following a formal or informal challenge.

That distinction matters for this novel: Columbus parents’ request was refused, the Selinsgrove reading-list removal was reversed, and the Savannah ban was later reversed. Other entries report removal or restricted school use. Describing all these events simply as “the book was banned” would conceal their different settings and outcomes.
Does the history show whether it is restricted today?
No. These historical examples do not establish whether a particular school currently assigns or stocks the novel, and the available records do not establish a school-by-school picture for 2026. The ALA says its censorship records draw on reports from library professionals, news coverage, confidential reports, and public records, but many incidents go unreported. It describes its portal as a snapshot rather than a complete count; prior-year cases are validated before annual publication, generally during National Library Week in April, and historical details may be added during the year.

For broader context, the ALA’s 2026 data page reports that 4,235 unique titles were targeted for censorship in 2025 and that pressure groups and government officials initiated 92% of book challenges that year. Those figures describe library-sector activity overall; they are not counts of challenges to The Catcher in the Rye.

PEN America’s guidance describes written reconsideration requests and review committees as part of a school’s evaluation process. Its FAQ also summarizes the Supreme Court’s Board of Education, Island Trees Union Free School District v. Pico decision as limiting removal of school-library books merely because officials dislike their ideas. That general legal context does not decide the merits or outcome of the novel’s individual challenges.

Sarah Lamdan, executive director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom, argues that protecting children means creating safe learning spaces in which they can explore a range of ideas, rather than censoring library materials. Readers who want to judge the novel’s language and themes directly can read The Catcher in the Rye itself; the objections and decisions described above are part of its censorship history, not a substitute for reading it.
