Rebecca Ferguson’s exit and Ilsa Faust’s death are two separate decisions. Ferguson has said that leaving the franchise was her choice after her three-film deal was complete. The way Ilsa leaves the story was decided by writer-director Christopher McQuarrie and his team. Ferguson’s reasons were about the character and the time a Mission film demands. McQuarrie’s reported reason for the death was to make the danger facing Ethan Hunt and his team feel real by showing that a valued ally could be lost.
Two decisions, two sets of reasons
Most confusion about this storyline comes from treating Ferguson’s departure and Ilsa’s death as one event. The reporting describes them separately, so it helps to keep them apart.
| Decision | Who described it | Reason given | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferguson leaving the franchise after Dead Reckoning | Ferguson, in her own words | Her three-film deal was done; she felt the next film left too little room for Ilsa’s rogue, unpredictable qualities; she weighed the time a large production takes | TheWrap, April 17, 2024, reporting Ferguson’s UnWrapped podcast appearance |
| How Ilsa exits the story | McQuarrie and his team, according to Ferguson | Reported rationale: a valued ally’s death shows that the threat to Ethan and his team is serious | NME, August 2023, paraphrasing McQuarrie; Ferguson’s account in TheWrap, April 2024 |
The second row is a secondhand account of the director’s reasoning. It is not a verbatim quotation from McQuarrie.
What Ferguson has said
Ferguson’s most detailed on-the-record comments came in a podcast appearance that TheWrap reported on April 17, 2024. She described her exit as a mutual arrangement in one respect: she chose to leave, while the filmmakers chose the mechanics of Ilsa’s end.

The deal was complete
Ferguson opened by addressing fan reaction directly. In her words: “To speak very clearly — because I know a lot of people are sad about it, I’m sad about it — I had filmed three films. My deal was done.”
Ilsa had stopped being Ilsa
Her creative objection was about the character. Ferguson said the next film did not seem to offer “enough space” for Ilsa to be the person she had been. Her explanation: “Ilsa was becoming a team player. And we all can want different things, but for me, Ilsa was rogue. Ilsa was naughty. Ilsa was unpredictable. There was a lot of characters coming in, not leaving enough space for what she had been.”

- The complete 2-movie collection of Tom Cruise's final Mission Impossible saga.
That is the strongest clue to her decision. Ilsa was built as a double-crossing agent who could not be relied on, and Ferguson felt the later films were pulling her toward the team and away from that edge.
The cost of a Mission shoot
Ferguson also weighed time. She said a Mission film can take more than a year to make, and that much of an actor’s time on a set this large is spent waiting. “Selfishly, that’s a lot of time to make a ‘Mission’ film. And unless you’re going to have a lot of screen time, that’s a lot of time sitting around waiting to film a huge movie that could take over a year to film,” she said.

She also tied the decision to the value of the role: “There’s a moment where you think it needs to be worth it, not just to love the character and to embrace Tom and [McQuarrie] and the story. I want to work, man. I want to work. I don’t want to sit in a trailer and know that there’s maybe coming a scene in credits.”
The “over a year” figure is Ferguson’s own estimate of how long a film of this scale takes. It is not an industry statistic, and it should not be read as one.

Why the filmmakers chose Ilsa’s death
In the film, Gabriel kills Ilsa during the Venice confrontation. The reasoning reported for that choice is that losing a valued ally makes the danger to Ethan and his team feel consequential. Coverage in August 2023 attributed this to McQuarrie. Because the NME report could not be accessed directly for this article, treat that rationale as reported paraphrase rather than his exact words.
The rationale explains the intent behind the death. It does not establish how audiences or critics judged the choice, which is a separate question.

What the reporting does not show
Several explanations circulate online, and the available reporting supports none of them:
- A feud between Ferguson and the production.
- A firing or a contract dispute. Ferguson described her deal as complete, and her account describes an offer she turned down, not one withdrawn.
- A scheduling conflict. Her stated concern was the time commitment and the size of the role, not a clash with dates.
Ferguson’s comments are the most detailed on-record account available. They date from April 2024, and no later statement from her on this specific decision was reviewed for this article.
How the two explanations connect
Ferguson’s objection was that Ilsa was becoming a team player. The filmmakers’ choice removes the character at the point where she has become most committed to Ethan’s side. Read that way, the death closes the arc Ferguson said she wanted to avoid, while the reported rationale is that it raises the stakes. Both points come from the same material, but they are separate accounts of one decision, and neither confirms the other.
The follow-up, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, was released in 2025. The reporting covered here concerns Dead Reckoning Part One, the film in which Ilsa dies.
