In Evil Dead (2013), the rain of blood is a supernatural sign that the prophecy Eric reads is being fulfilled. Once the Taker of Souls has claimed five souls, the sky bleeds and the Abomination rises. The screenplay shows the rain stopping after Mia defeats the creature.
What the blood rain means in the story
Eric reads from the book that the Taker of Souls will bring about a bleeding sky and the rise of an Abomination when its thirst for souls is appeased. The prophecy sets five claimed souls as the condition. The rain is therefore an omen and part of the supernatural event unfolding in the film—not ordinary weather with a meteorological explanation.

The screenplay links the blood rain to the Abomination’s emergence and has it stop after Mia defeats the creature. The screenplay establishes the film’s internal logic; it does not offer a scientific mechanism for the phenomenon.
How the filmmakers created the sequence
The supernatural explanation belongs to the story; the production effect was staged for the film. Co-writer Rodo Sayagues recalled, “We just wrote, ‘It starts raining blood for 20 minutes.’” Director Fede Alvarez described relying on the effects and practical-effects teams to realize the idea. Their interview with The Reel Story conveys the ambition of the written concept, but does not document a detailed rig or establish how the final cut divided practical and digital work.

- Five friends have found the mysterious and fiercely powerful Book of the Dead which releases a violent demon on a bloodthirsty quest to possess them all.
In a 2013 ComingSoon.net interview, Alvarez estimated that filming the rain in the woods took about a week, followed by “two or more three days on stage” for the shed portion. Jane Levy said the cast was covered in blood before takes and that the crew became stained pink. These are participants’ recollections in an interview, not independently verified production records.
Alvarez also told Collider that a truck held “50,000 gallon” of blood material during production, particularly for the ending. That is his reported estimate; the interview does not establish that the full quantity was used for the rain sequence alone.
