When was Archive 81 cancelled?
The series premiered on January 14, 2022. TVLine reported its cancellation on March 24, a little over two months later, after its first and only season. The season consisted of eight one-hour episodes, according to Netflix’s original series-order announcement.

Netflix described the supernatural thriller as loosely inspired by the Archive 81 podcast. It follows archivist Dan Turner as he restores videotapes from 1994 and becomes drawn into filmmaker Melody Pendras’s investigation of a cult. Netflix’s order announcement also credited podcast creators Marc Sollinger and Daniel Powell as co-producers on the television adaptation.
Did Netflix give a reason for cancelling Archive 81?
The cancellation report cited here does not quote Netflix giving a reason, and no show-specific viewing-hours total, completion rate, budget, subscriber-acquisition result, or renewal threshold is established in the available reporting. The precise internal reasoning is therefore not confirmed.

TVLine noted that the series briefly appeared in Nielsen’s U.S. ranking of streaming originals. That chart appearance is limited context: it does not show how Netflix assessed the series or explain why the company declined to order another season. Claims that low viewership, cost, or a particular performance metric caused the cancellation should not be treated as confirmed.
Why did a second season seem possible?
Before the cancellation was reported, creator and showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine said the series had not been conceived as a one-season story. In a January 21, 2022 interview with TheWrap, she said, “It wasn’t conceived as a one-season show. I think there are more stories to tell.” She also said the writers had ideas and were excited to continue.

Those comments describe the creative team’s intentions, not a Netflix renewal commitment. The first season’s cliffhanger and the showrunner’s plans made continuation imaginable, but neither establishes that a second season had been approved.

The available sources do not establish a revival or continuation elsewhere.
