Warner Bros. began posting older, full-length films on its YouTube channels in January 2025. The uploads were free to watch where available, but the studio has not publicly explained why it chose these films. The reported catalog grew from more than 30 titles in early February to 40 in Omdia’s March 2025 analysis; those are dated snapshots, not a current count.
What Warner Bros. posted—and where
These were films uploaded to Warner Bros.-owned YouTube channels, not simply titles in YouTube Movies, the separate rental-and-purchase storefront. Omdia drew that distinction in its March 2025 analysis: Warner Bros. has confounded the market by releasing old movies free onto YouTube.
The number depends on when it was reported. The San Francisco Chronicle described more than 30 full movies on February 6, 2025, while Omdia counted 40 in March. Neither figure establishes how many films remain available now.
Which films were included?
The early selection ranged across genres and reputations. The February 6, 2025 San Francisco Chronicle report listed titles including Waiting for Guffman, Mr. Nice Guy, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Crossing Delancey, Deathtrap, The Mission and True Stories. Its full list also included:

- Price of Glory, Return of the Living Dead Part II, The Science of Sleep, SubUrbia, The Wind and the Lion and The Year of Living Dangerously
This is the newspaper’s reported list at that date, not a live YouTube inventory. Omdia highlighted the range of critical histories: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) received seven Academy Award nominations, and The Mission won the Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1987. Those distinctions do not mean either film is currently on the playlist.
Why is Warner Bros. doing it?
There is no confirmed public explanation in the reporting cited here. Omdia’s David Hancock, Chief Analyst, Media & Entertainment, described the move as a distribution strategy and suggested YouTube could help the studio gauge interest in long-overlooked titles. The analysis also reasoned that films with limited value on subscription services might find viewers through YouTube’s broader discovery environment. The San Francisco Chronicle suggested the platform could be a lower-cost way to distribute older content.

These are interpretations, not statements of Warner Bros.’ intent. Without an official explanation, it is fair to call the decision mysterious; it is not established that a particular business goal prompted the uploads.
Can you watch the films outside the US?
Availability varies by title and country. Omdia said the films it examined in March 2025 were available in the US and blocked in the UK at that time. That finding is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee about any individual video today. Check the official video page while signed in or browsing from the country where you plan to watch.

- Factory sealed DVD
YouTube’s separate Free Primetime Movies program currently lists the US, Australia, Japan, Germany and the UK. That country list applies to that program, not automatically to Warner Bros.’ channel uploads. YouTube describes Free Primetime as ad-supported and says Premium or Premium Lite subscribers can watch that catalog ad-free; those terms should not be assumed for a Warner Bros. upload unless its own listing confirms them. YouTube notes of its Free Primetime catalog: “The content updates regularly, so check back often.”

The February 2025 newspaper report said most of the films on its list were unavailable on Max at that time. That does not establish their current Max status, and the evidence here does not support a title-by-title comparison with today’s streaming catalogs. Check the particular film’s current listing in your region rather than assuming the YouTube upload signals whether it is or is not on Max.

How to find a current official upload
- Search YouTube for the exact film title and Warner Bros., then open the result published by a Warner Bros.-owned channel.
- Confirm the page is the full film rather than a trailer, clip, rental listing or unrelated upload.
- Try playback from your location. A video may be unavailable or restricted in your country even if a dated article listed it.
- Check the video’s own page for any current access or advertising details; do not infer them from YouTube’s separate Free Primetime catalog.
