Walton Goggins felt anxious about Sam Rockwell joining The White Lotus because Rockwell was both a longtime close friend and an actor Goggins admired as a hero. After years without working together, Goggins wanted their reunion to go well: “I didn’t want to let my friend down.”
Why the cameo felt personal to Goggins
Goggins explained his nerves in a Vanity Fair interview published March 17, 2025. He said he and Rockwell had been friends for about 15 years and described Rockwell as one of his dearest friends and a hero. Their last film together was Cowboys & Aliens; they had not acted together since.

Goggins said another actor had initially been expected to play Frank. When that did not work out, Rockwell was the person he wanted for the role. That made the part more than an ordinary casting choice: Goggins was working opposite someone whose judgment mattered to him, while returning to a shared professional relationship after a long gap. “Further complicating this collaboration is that Sam is my hero,” he told Vanity Fair. He summed up the pressure plainly: “So coming into this experience, there was a certain amount of anxiety, meaning I didn’t want to let my friend down.”
What happens in Rockwell’s episode
Rockwell appears as Frank, an old friend of Goggins’s character, Rick Hatchett. In season 3, episode 5, “Full-Moon Party,” Rick meets Frank in Bangkok. Frank launches into an extended account of his past and sobriety, turning the reunion into a scene built around Rick listening and reacting.

The episode aired March 16, 2025. TV Insider’s episode coverage also records Goggins’s explanation of how their real-life trust shaped the scene.
How their friendship shaped the performance
Goggins described their working relationship as one of trust and attentive listening. “Sam is not only my best friend, he’s one of my heroes. He trusts me and I trust him and… we have this symbiotic kind of listening relationship,” he told TV Insider. He said Rockwell’s delivery kept changing his reactions, so the exchange did not feel identical from one take to the next.

They performed the scene “like seven or eight times,” Goggins told Vanity Fair, and he said “everything was different every single time.” He also described the first day together as comfortable, marked by respect and affection. Their friendship gave them a real foundation for playing old friends reconnecting, but it did not mean Goggins had already processed Frank’s story before the cameras rolled.

Goggins said Frank’s revelations took Rick—and, in the moment, Goggins as a scene partner—time to absorb. He recalled responding without judgment: “I had no judgment. It took me a moment to wrap my head around this particular life experience, so it was like, ‘wow, wow, okay.’ But without judgment – I think that’s so beautiful about it.”

As Goggins put it of Rick’s reaction, “Everything changes in that moment. But it was beautiful.”
