He said he wanted to leave healthy for himself and his family. He did not identify a specific medical diagnosis as the reason.
What happened in the Bills–Chargers game
Davis, then a Bills cornerback, did not return for the second half against the Los Angeles Chargers. Buffalo went into halftime trailing 28–6 and lost 31–20, according to ESPN’s September 16, 2018 report.
What Davis said prompted his decision
In his postgame statement, Davis described a realization during the game that he could not continue playing at the level he expected of himself. ESPN reported his words: “This was an overwhelming decision, but I’m at peace with myself and my family.” He said he chose to prioritize his well-being rather than play out the season and risk leaving unhealthy.
Three days later, Davis gave a more precise account in an interview with ESPN’s The Undefeated. CBS Sports’ account of the interview reported that he made the decision with 47 seconds left in the first half, after the Bills had cut the deficit to 28–6. Davis said, “I don’t belong on that field anymore.” He also described leaving as a personal decision and said it was therapeutic, adding that he had not expected others to understand it.

The abrupt departure surprised people in Buffalo. Coach Sean McDermott said Davis had removed himself from the game and communicated that he was done. Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander criticized the timing as disrespectful to teammates. Davis said he did not intend to hurt them. Those are different perspectives on the impact of his decision; they do not establish an intent beyond what Davis said about it.
