Season 5 answers the question Season 1 left open. According to the show’s own explanation, Vecna took Will in 1983 as his first vessel, and the experience showed him what he could do with human hosts. Vecna’s later plan again depends on children as controllable vessels and on using Will as a spy. Whether that counts as a “plot hole” being solved depends on how you define the gap. The official creator commentary describes a payoff and a full-circle story, not a correction of an earlier contradiction.
What Season 5 says about 1983
Netflix Tudum’s Episode 4 explainer, published December 4, 2025, reports that Vecna says Will showed him what was possible when he took him as his first vessel in 1983. The same explainer says Vecna wants 12 children because he considers them easier to shape and control, and that he intends to use Will as his spy again. Taken together, these lines make the abduction the first successful experiment with a human vessel and a lasting link Vecna could exploit later.
The limits of that statement matter. The explainer establishes what Vecna says about the experience, not a step-by-step account of how he carried out the 1983 abduction. Viewers who want the tactical details of that year will need to infer them, and any such inference should be labelled as inference.
Why the creators brought Will back
In a Netflix Tudum interview published December 5, 2025, co-creator Ross Duffer explained the thinking behind the payoff: “We’ve always known that Will has a connection to Vecna and the Upside Down.” He said the creative idea was to let Will harness that connection against the villains. Returning the story to Will, he added, felt natural: “He was the kid who was taken in Season 1, so it felt right for the story to come full circle.”

The creators wanted Will to grow, resolve longstanding inner conflict, and accept who he is, and Ross ties that growth to Will harnessing the power. This is creator commentary on character and story, not a general claim about how such connections work.
How Will’s connection works in Season 5
The Episode 4 explainer says Will taps into his connection to Vecna to take control of Demogorgons and save his friends. The cited material supports describing this as power mediated by that connection. It does not support claiming that Will has the same kind of innate abilities as Eleven, so readers should not treat the two as interchangeable.

Plot hole or unanswered question?
The headline calls the old mystery a “plot hole,” but the official sources describe it as a connection and a full-circle story. A careful reading can say that Season 5 answers the earlier “why Will?” question without asserting that Season 1 contained a continuity contradiction.

That distinction matters. An unanswered question is not automatically an inconsistency. Ross Duffer’s statement that the creators always knew of a connection shows intent to build toward it, but it does not prove that every later detail was fixed when Will’s abduction was first written. On that reading, Season 5 resolves a mystery the show had deliberately held back, which is an editorial assessment rather than a claim the creators make in those words.

The Netflix Tudum finale interview, published January 2, 2026, adds context to Vecna’s relationship with the Mind Flayer. It does not change the direct Season 5 explanation for Will’s abduction. Ross Duffer says the writers considered a moment in which Henry might turn against the Mind Flayer, then chose a version in which Henry ultimately chooses its side.

The Duffers also say that The First Shadow, a stage play, explores Henry’s struggles after the connection but is not essential viewing for Season 5. Readers do not need to see the play to understand why Vecna took Will.
The answer for readers, then, is that Season 5 explains Will’s 1983 abduction as Vecna’s first vessel experiment and as the start of a link he still uses. Whether that closes a “plot hole” is a question of definition, and the official sources support the narrower claim: the mystery is answered, not shown to have been a flaw.
