Director Christopher McQuarrie has said the production returned to film pickups and reshoots after that hair change, so the wig was used to keep Ethan Hunt’s appearance consistent with the earlier footage.
The continuity problem behind the wig
Film productions rarely shoot in story order, and a franchise entry can end up being finished long after its sequel has started. In McQuarrie’s account, that is exactly what happened here. Cruise had begun growing out his hair for the next film, but a number of scenes for Dead Reckoning Part One still had to be shot after that change. A wig let those scenes match the hairstyle audiences had already seen on screen.
McQuarrie explained the timeline while discussing the film’s ending in a GamesRadar+ interview from 2023. He said the farewell between Ethan and Grace was filmed two years after production began, and joked: “Tom has his hair from Part Two and he’s in a wig!”
The scenes McQuarrie identified
The farewell between Ethan and Grace
This is the one example McQuarrie named most specifically. He said the shot was made two years after the material on either side of it, so the hair in that moment reflected the later look rather than the earlier one. Because the scene sits in the film’s emotional close, it is the most visible case of the continuity fix.

The food-delivery scene
In an appearance on the Empire Spoiler Special Movie Podcast, McQuarrie also said Cruise wore a wig in the food-delivery scene. CinemaBlend’s report from 10 August 2023 quotes him praising the result as “a sensational wig by our amazing makeup department.”
Pickups and reshoots
The broader explanation covers any pickups and reshoots made after work on the follow-up began. McQuarrie’s comments in that podcast put it this way: “He’s wearing a wig in a lot of the movie.” The phrase “a lot of the movie” is his own, and it refers to the later pickups and reshoots rather than to a count of scenes.

“Tom’s wearing a wig in that shot because he’s got his [Part Two] hair. So keep in mind that any pickups and reshoots that we did after we started shooting Part Two, Tom’s got a different hairstyle.”

What the evidence does and does not support
The explanation is solid on the core point, but it has limits that matter if you are repeating it:
Rank #3
- Supported: Cruise wore a wig in selected later scenes, including the farewell and the food-delivery scene, because his hair had changed for the follow-up.
- Supported: The wig was part of pickups and reshoots made after that change, not a stylistic choice for the whole production.
- Not established: That Cruise wore a wig for the entire film. McQuarrie’s “a lot of the movie” remark is the strongest wording available, and it does not give a scene count.
- Not established: The name of a wig artist, supplier, or product. McQuarrie credited the makeup department, and the reviewed coverage names no individual or company.
No measured figure supports the wig story. The one timing detail, the two-year gap before the farewell scene, comes from McQuarrie himself and describes the production schedule, not an independent measurement.

- CinemaBlend report on the Empire Spoiler Special Movie Podcast (10 August 2023), source of the pickups, reshoots, and food-delivery details.
- Empire Spoiler Specials episode listing (2023), which identifies the McQuarrie interview about Dead Reckoning Part One. The listing does not include a transcript, so the quotes above come from the GamesRadar+ and CinemaBlend reports.
Because all of these comments come from one director’s interviews in 2023, treat them as his account of the production rather than a studio-published production log.
