Tim McGraw stepped away from Netflix’s planned bull-riding drama in January 2025. A report attributed his decision to a source close to him, who said McGraw needed back surgery and time to recover. The series’ eventual fate has not been established by the sources available.
What was Tim McGraw’s role in the Netflix drama?
Netflix announced the then-untitled drama on May 15, 2024, with McGraw set to star as a champion bull rider and executive-produce. The story was to follow a megastar champion whose encounter with a fearless young rider challenges his approach and brings secrets from his past to the surface. Netflix named Brandon Camp as creator, showrunner and executive producer, and Taylor Elmore as co-showrunner and executive producer. Netflix’s announcement described the project, but did not establish its later production status.

Why did he leave?
Deadline reported on January 25, 2025, that a source close to McGraw said he needed back surgery that would require recovery time. The report characterized the bull-riding part as physically demanding. The medical explanation was attributed to that source, not presented as a public statement from McGraw. Yahoo Entertainment’s republication of Deadline’s report covered the departure.
The same report said McGraw had undergone surgery on both knees in August 2024 after an injury during his tour, and that the remaining concert dates that year were canceled. Those details, too, are reported information rather than a direct account from McGraw.

Did McGraw explain the exit himself?
No directly attributable statement from McGraw explaining why he left this particular Netflix series is established in the available coverage. A May 2025 Bobby Bones Show episode listing on iHeart describes an interview touching on multiple surgeries, health and a rodeo show. The listing is not a transcript and does not verify a first-person explanation of the Netflix departure.

January 2025 coverage described the show’s future as unclear. Recasting was discussed as expected or possible, not confirmed. TV Insider reported at the time that Netflix and Skydance had not publicly addressed the matter. Its contemporaneous account is here.
Rank #2
No reliable later announcement in the sources available confirms that the drama was produced, recast, canceled or given a new title. The project’s ultimate status therefore remains unresolved; the original Netflix announcement alone is not evidence that production went ahead.
