Thomas Gibson was dismissed from Criminal Minds on August 12, 2016, after an on-set dispute with writer and co-executive producer Virgil Williams. Contemporary news reports, citing unnamed sources, said Gibson kicked Williams. The studios confirmed Gibson’s dismissal but did not publicly detail the incident; Gibson described it as a creative disagreement and said he regretted it.

What was confirmed—and what was reported

ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios announced Gibson’s dismissal in a joint statement: “Thomas Gibson has been dismissed from ‘Criminal Minds.’ Creative details for how the character’s exit will be addressed in the show will be announced at a later date.” The statement confirmed the decision but did not explain what happened or identify a specific reason.

Gibson said, “There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred.” That was his account of the dispute, not a fuller explanation from the studios.

In contemporary coverage, the Los Angeles Times attributed the account that Gibson kicked Williams to an unnamed source cited by Deadline. CBS News, reporting with the Associated Press, also described the kick as something reported by Deadline. The alleged kick was therefore part of press reporting, not a detail established in the studios’ announcement.

What happened before the dismissal

The dispute occurred while Gibson was directing an episode during production of the show’s twelfth season. Williams was identified in reports as the writer and co-executive producer involved. Gibson had played FBI agent Aaron Hotchner since the series premiered in 2005.

On August 11, 2016, the Los Angeles Times reported Gibson’s expression of regret and said the nature of the altercation remained unclear. That report described a suspension as being reported while Gibson’s future with the show was under review. The next day, the studios announced that he had been dismissed.

Some entertainment outlets reported that Gibson was first suspended for two episodes before his dismissal. That sequence appeared in press accounts, not in the studios’ brief public statement.

What Gibson said afterward

In comments to People magazine reported by ABC News on September 23, 2016, Gibson said: “If I had the chance to do some things differently, I might. But there is a context to each of these incidents and I think that they don’t add up to what ended up happening.” He also said he did not believe he deserved to be fired. Those remarks express his view of the decision; they do not provide an independent account of the studio’s reasoning.
