Lauren Schmidt Hissrich says Liam Hemsworth felt like the right choice for Geralt because he spoke frankly about what had connected with him in earlier seasons and what he wanted to change. She also saw the combination the role needed: a monster hunter’s physical presence alongside emotional depth and vulnerability. Her explanation describes a creative judgment—not a claim that Hemsworth should reproduce the previous performance.
What convinced Lauren Schmidt Hissrich
Hissrich, The Witcher’s creator and showrunner, said her confidence began in their first meeting. Hemsworth could explain both what resonated with him in the earlier seasons and what he hoped to shift in his own portrayal. That candor gave her a sense of how he might approach Geralt as a character rather than simply inherit a familiar role.
“The very first time that I met with Liam Hemsworth, in my gut, I knew that he would make a perfect Geralt for us in Season 4, because he was able to be very honest with me about the things that really resonated with him in earlier seasons, and also some things he’d like to shift,” Hissrich told Netflix Tudum.
The role needed strength and vulnerability
Geralt has to be convincing as an action-ready monster hunter, but Hissrich’s account of the casting emphasizes that physicality was only half the requirement. She also wanted an actor who could convey emotional loss and vulnerability. In an interview with GamesRadar+, she said Hemsworth brought the two qualities together on his first day on set:
“When he landed the first day, and he brought these two things together, that sort of emotional character piece and this sort of hulking physicality, we knew we’d made the right choice,” Hissrich said.
That pairing, rather than physical resemblance or action ability alone, is the clearest explanation Hissrich gave for why Hemsworth suited the show’s version of Geralt.
Hemsworth was meant to make Geralt his own
Hissrich said the creative team did not want Hemsworth to imitate the earlier portrayal. The aim was for him to take ownership of the character while retaining Geralt’s place in the story. In an Oct. 27, 2025 TV Insider interview, she put the approach plainly:
“What we didn’t want to do was feel like he was coming in and try to mimic anything. We wanted him to come in and fully own this character for himself.”

Hissrich described Hemsworth’s take as funnier, more relaxed, vulnerable, and emotionally expressive. Those are her observations about his interpretation, not a ranking of the two actors or a claim that one version is objectively better.
He was initially unsure, then prepared for the part
Hemsworth told Tudum he was hesitant about stepping into an established series midway through its run. His interest as a fan of the video game and a conversation with Hissrich helped him feel able to take it on:

“Initially, I was pretty hesitant and unsure,” the actor said. “It’s an odd thing to be asked to come in midway through a series like this and continue on as the lead character. But, as a fan of the video game, I felt like I could do something cool with it.”
He also said physical training began after he accepted the role. He arrived in London about three months before filming to prepare, including learning sword fighting. These reported preparation details come from his Netflix Tudum interview, published Oct. 30, 2025.
