Disney’s stated reason was creative: the filmmakers wanted figures that recalled the 1937 animated original but also felt magical in the new film’s world, with recognizable charm and room for more developed emotional arcs. The production notes describe CGI as the team’s chosen approach—not as something live actors or practical makeup could not achieve.
Why did Disney make the dwarfs CGI?
Director Marc Webb said the goal was to respect the original animated film while making characters suited to the new one: “Our goal has always been to create characters that feel respectful of the original animated film, but who are also reflective of the new world that we’re creating.”

Producer Marc Platt said the filmmakers tested ways to render the characters in CGI while making them feel photorealistic. Webb described CGI as the best way, in the filmmakers’ view, to combine otherworldly qualities with humour, charm and added depth. That explains the studio’s decision; it does not establish that CGI was the only workable option.
Disney’s production notes describe the creative rationale and process. They do not say the team publicly ranked CGI against every possible live-action or practical alternative.

Were the dwarfs computer-generated in the finished film?
Yes. The seven characters—Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey—are CGI in the finished 2025 film. Their digital appearance does not mean every element of their production was virtual: practical puppets and physical costumes also played a part in making the scenes.
How did the actors work with CGI characters on set?
Disney’s production notes say puppetry elements helped the live performers interact with the characters during principal photography. Puppets also provided a physical scale reference for the director and cinematographer when framing shots, setting focus and composing scenes. The finished characters were created in post-production.

Costume designer Sandy Powell made physical costumes for the characters, which the visual-effects team scanned into a computer. The practical aids helped shape the live-action photography; they were not the final on-screen versions of the dwarfs.
Why was the CGI choice criticized?
The creative explanation is separate from the representation debate. After actor Peter Dinklage criticized the premise in 2022, Disney said it was taking a different approach to the characters and had consulted members of the dwarfism community, according to TIME’s reporting. TIME also reported criticism that making the characters CGI meant losing roles for actors with dwarfism. Those concerns are part of the public discussion, not proof that one controversy alone determined the final design.

The finished look also drew critical responses. The Associated Press review described the CGI characters as visually uncanny beside the human cast. That is a critic’s assessment of the result, rather than a technical finding or the filmmakers’ stated intention.

Disney’s explanation is that CGI best served its aim of combining recognizable characters and charm from the animated classic with a magical quality and greater emotional depth for the new film. Puppets and scanned costumes supported the live-action production, while the dwarfs seen on screen are computer-generated. The approach remains debated, particularly over representation and casting opportunities.
