He said he recognized that endpoint while writing season four—not because a ratings problem or HBO cancellation has been established as the cause.
Why did The Righteous Gemstones end?
McBride’s explanation was creative: as he wrote the fourth season, the characters and the series’ ideas were moving toward resolutions that felt like a complete story. In a January 2025 interview with GQ, he said it “felt natural” and described the story as bringing its themes, ideas and characters “to a conclusion, to something that felt like completion.”

He elaborated in a March 2025 interview with The National: while working on the season, he kept arriving at resolutions and themes of moving on. As the ending came closer, he felt the show had done what it needed to do with the story.
Was the show canceled by HBO?
HBO announced season four as the final season; Warner Bros. Discovery’s January 30, 2025 announcement specified nine episodes and a March 9 premiere. That confirms the series was ending, but the announcement does not say HBO canceled it because of ratings or another network-driven reason.

The public explanation documented by McBride is that the story felt complete. The available sources do not establish ratings, budget constraints or executive pressure as the cause, so those should not be treated as explanations for the ending.
Did McBride want an open-ended finale?
Yes. McBride did not want the finale to feel like a final judgment on the characters. In a May 2025 interview with TheWrap, he said, “There’s a finality to a show ending with judgment, and I didn’t want it to end that way.” The ending could bring the series’ central story to a close while leaving room to imagine that the characters’ lives continue after the credits.

McBride described the goodbye as sad because he loved the people involved and valued what they had made together. He also said he felt they had completed the story they set out to tell. The decision, as he described it, was not a claim that the experience had gone badly; it was a sense that this chapter had reached its end.
How does the show’s satire fit into the ending?
The series’ satire often targets hypocrisy and the commercialization of religion, rather than religious belief itself. In an Associated Press interview about the final season, McBride said he hoped religious viewers would understand that the joke was not at their expense; he described its target as people who say one thing and live another. That context helps explain the show’s themes, but McBride did not identify it as the reason the series ended.
