That convergence signals a shift in how people participate in major news stories online—not proof that the phenomenon was unprecedented or that social-media posts represent public opinion.
Why is the internet obsessed with Luigi Mangione?
The reaction combined several kinds of attention that often get treated as if they were one. Contemporary coverage described jokes and memes, edits and fanfiction, appearance-focused posts, and merchandise. Alongside those, users cast Mangione as a symbol in arguments about health care, corporate power and the treatment of ordinary people by large institutions.
Those strands could overlap, but they did not make every participant’s motive the same. A person sharing a joke, a person expressing anger at insurers and a person following Mangione as a celebrity-like figure may all appear in the same online conversation without sharing a political position or a view of the killing. WIRED’s December 2024 account, Axios’s report on the online reaction and the Associated Press’s coverage of competing interpretations all described a mix of political grievance and participatory fandom.
Why are people online supporting Luigi Mangione?
Some online support was connected to anger about health insurance and corporate power. In that reading, Mangione became a vessel for grievances about an industry and a system that many people see as remote or unaccountable. But the reaction was not only a political argument: humor, fascination with Mangione himself and the conventions of internet fandom were also part of it.

Calling someone a “folk hero” or sharing content about them does not establish that a person endorses a killing. Nor does it show that everyone who posted approvingly held the same beliefs. The visible conversation contained different motives and degrees of seriousness, and the sources do not quantify how common each was.
Does online support reflect what the public thinks?
No single poll or social-media feed answers that question. Polls offer snapshots of particular samples at particular times; social platforms show what users choose to post and what becomes visible. The two should not be conflated.

What one student survey found
In a Generation Lab survey conducted December 19–23, 2024, among 1,026 college students, 45% said they sympathized more with Mangione, 17% with UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and 37% with neither. The same survey found that 48% said the killing was totally or somewhat justified. Axios reported a margin of error of ±3.4 percentage points. These results describe that student sample at that time—not all young people, all adults or current opinion. See Axios’s survey report for the figures and context.
How views varied by age
The Washington Post’s December 18, 2024 summary of YouGov polling said adults under 30 were about evenly divided between favorable and unfavorable views of Mangione, with roughly a third in each category. It also reported an age contrast in views of Thompson’s killing. The Post cautioned that reactions on social media can distort impressions of broader opinion: extreme views may be unusually visible. These findings, too, are dated snapshots rather than measurements of opinion in October 2026. The Washington Post’s polling analysis discusses the results and their limits.

What changed about how the internet reacts to criminal cases?
The notable shift is in the form of participation. A major criminal story can become not only something people watch or debate, but raw material for making and circulating content: memes, fan edits, fictional stories, appearance-focused posts and political symbolism. The accused person can become a focal point for identity and entertainment as well as for arguments about institutions.
That is a useful way to understand this case, but the available reporting does not establish that the pattern is entirely new, unique to Mangione, or shared across every platform and demographic. A systematic comparison with other viral criminal cases would need to examine whose story dominates, how institutional grievance shapes the response, the balance of politics and fandom, how long attention lasts, and whether claims about public sympathy are supported by representative polling. The sources here do not provide that comparison.

Ryan Broderick, writing in his Garbage Day newsletter and quoted by WIRED, offered a vivid contemporary reading: “It’s possible that this is the most aligned America—well, aside from the folks in its highest tax brackets—has been about a news story since the invention of the internet.” That is commentary on the mood of the moment, not a polling result or a settled historical finding.

In a retrospective published December 10, 2025, and updated December 16, KQED described the case as a cultural flashpoint even though the initial buzz had quieted. Its reporting noted continued online attention and in-person supporters, as well as concerns about how a high-profile case unfolds in an online environment.

KQED also discussed potential jury-selection challenges through the perspective of a legal expert it interviewed. That is a concern about the environment surrounding a high-profile case, not proof that online reaction had a specific effect on any eventual jury. The retrospective is not a current docket, so it does not establish the case’s procedural status as of October 2026. Read KQED’s one-year retrospective.
