The Hardy Boyz’ New Brood run was brief and never grew into a distinct identity of its own—but calling it a disaster overlooks what the storyline led to. Matt and Jeff joined Gangrel in August 1999 after breaking with Michael Hayes; by the night after their October No Mercy ladder match with Edge and Christian, Matt was rejecting the New Brood label. The faction was short-lived. The rivalry it helped frame became a significant part of WWE’s tag-team history.
Why did the Hardy Boyz join Gangrel?
WWE dates the Hardy Boyz’ turn to the New Brood to August 9, 1999. They had been pursuing tag-team championships under manager Michael Hayes since June, according to WWE’s Jeff Hardy chronology. After the brothers broke with Hayes, they aligned with Gangrel, who had been turned on by Edge and Christian. The move placed the Hardys on Gangrel’s side of the conflict and set up a feud with Edge and Christian.
That makes the New Brood’s appeal easier to understand as a wrestling angle: the Hardy Boyz’ darker presentation and Gangrel’s involvement gave the rivalry a new frame. But the available chronology does not show the group developing a substantial story independent of that feud. That is a reading of what happened on screen, not evidence of WWE’s backstage plan.
How long were the Hardy Boyz the New Brood?
The New Brood label lasted roughly two months, from the August 9 turn to Matt Hardy’s rejection of it on the October 18 episode of Raw. The pivotal match came one day earlier, at No Mercy on October 17, when the Hardy Boyz faced Edge and Christian in a ladder match.

WWE’s No Mercy archival video description identifies the match as setting a new standard for ladder matches. The Hardys won, along with the managerial services of Terri Runnels, according to WWE’s chronology. The match was the payoff to the teams’ rivalry—not proof that the New Brood had become a lasting faction.
Why did the New Brood break up?
On Raw the following night, Matt Hardy made the on-screen shift unmistakable: “We are NOT the New Brood – we’re the Hardys.” A contemporary recap of the October 18, 1999 Raw records the line and describes Edge and Christian appearing to show respect after the ladder match.

The timing suggests the New Brood presentation was dropped as the rivalry reached its payoff. It does not establish why WWE made that choice backstage. The available sources do not document a creative explanation, audience rejection, or a decision to end the group because it had failed. The most grounded account is simply that the label was brief and Matt publicly reclaimed the Hardys identity immediately after No Mercy.
Why can the run feel like a failure?
The faction had little time to stand apart
A group that lasts only from August into October has limited time to establish its own character and stories. The New Brood’s most prominent arc was the Hardy Boyz’ conflict with Edge and Christian, so Gangrel and the faction name can feel like a transitional setup rather than a fully realized stable.

The match outlasted the label
In retrospect, the ladder match is the defining memory of this period, while Matt’s next-night declaration makes the New Brood name seem disposable. That contrast supports calling the faction underdeveloped or a misfire. It is a critical judgment based on the short on-screen arc, not a documented verdict from WWE or a measure of how viewers responded.

The evidence points to a short-lived faction presentation attached to a consequential rivalry, not a failed match or a documented rejection by audiences. WWE’s later retrospective on tag-team rivalries includes the Hardy Boyz–Edge and Christian rivalry among major programs spanning 1999–2001. The New Brood itself did not last, but the feud it helped frame remained important in WWE’s account of tag-team history.

Keep the distinction clear: the faction can be judged as underdeveloped without treating the entire period as a disaster. The ladder match delivered a major payoff, and the rivalry continued to matter beyond the New Brood name.
Was Lita part of the New Brood?
No. Lita’s association with Matt and Jeff began later, on May 26, 2000, when the Hardys helped her against Essa Rios. WWE identifies the trio as Team X-treme. Lita belongs to a later chapter of the Hardy Boyz’ story, not the 1999 New Brood run.
