That contrast helps explain why the teaser drew mixed reactions. For some viewers, the Overworld looked less like Minecraft brought to life than like Minecraft forms rendered in a visual language that did not quite fit them.
What the first trailer showed
Minecraft published its first look at A Minecraft Movie on September 3, 2024. The teaser introduced four characters entering the Overworld, described by the official announcement as a “bizarre, blocky wonderland.” The film, directed by Jared Hess, is a live-action adaptation starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Minecraft’s first-look announcement framed the trailer as a chance to see the Overworld “as you’ve never seen it before.”
That promise also set up the adaptation’s central visual tension. Minecraft’s game world communicates through block geometry and simplified forms. The teaser retained those recognizable shapes, but placed them in a live-action image with human actors, rendered creatures, and more lifelike lighting and textures. The result was not simply “realistic Minecraft”: it was a mixture of visual styles, and the mixture was what many viewers reacted to.
Why the realism could feel out of place
Calling the effect uncanny is an interpretation, not a measured verdict shared by every viewer. It becomes easier to understand when you look at the ingredients in the same frame:
#1 Best Overall
- BUILD THE DREADED CREEPER – Young explorers, ages 10 and up, build a large poseable version of the iconic Minecraft mob
- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head
- HIDDEN SURPRISE INSIDE – Builders can remove the Creeper's head to reveal a compartment that hides a first-version Creeper minifigure and TNT element
- POSEABLE ROOM DECOR – After building, kids can put their creation on display in the bedroom or playroom
- GIFT IDEA FOR KIDS – Makes a wonderful birthday or any-time gift idea for boys and girls
- Geometry: Minecraft’s blocks are not just a surface detail; their squared silhouettes make landscapes, animals, and objects instantly legible. More naturalistic materials and lighting can make those simple forms feel as though they belong to a different visual world.
- Human integration: Live-action actors bring familiar expressions, hair, clothing, and movement into a world whose creatures and terrain follow deliberately simplified geometry. The contrast can make the performers feel pasted into the setting rather than shaped by its visual rules.
- Scale and motion: Minecraft creatures are easy to read partly because of their block-built forms and game-like movement. If a creature’s shading or animation feels more lifelike than its proportions, the eye may register both styles at once instead of accepting one coherent design.
- Tone: The film’s premise is playful adventure. A polished, cinematic image can support that tone, but realism alone does not guarantee that a world feels playful or faithful to the game’s particular charm.
These are ways to describe the design contrast, not proof that a realistic treatment of Minecraft could never work. A different balance of geometry, materials, performance, and animation might make the same broad approach feel more unified. The first teaser’s mixed response suggests that this particular balance did not persuade everyone.
What the reaction does—and does not—tell us
November 2024 coverage by Ars Technica described the teaser’s response as mixed and noted criticism of the CGI and character designs, including Jason Momoa’s hair. In 2025, Screen Daily reported that Warner Bros.’ marketing team recognized a poor response to the September teaser and described a later campaign strategy of “blockifying” the world.

- 5 LEGO FIGURES – Builders can cast a Wastelands Wanderer minifigure, a slime and 3 zombies (including one with enchanted leggings and gold sword and one with diamond helmet) in their pretend play adventure stories
- GAMING-INSPIRED FUNCTIONS – Set in the Minecraft desert biome, this zombie dungeon features a rotating, zombie-spawning chamber and a sliding piece that triggers a rockfall

Those are qualitative accounts, not the results of a representative audience poll. They support the narrower conclusion that the first teaser attracted criticism and that the campaign responded to the reception; they do not show how every viewer felt, or establish one single reason for the reaction.
The film’s aim was recognition, not just photorealism
Minecraft’s official making-of feature, published November 17, 2024, says the crew wanted to bring familiar moments from a player’s journey to life, including experiencing the game’s first night and representing modders. That account points to an adaptation trying to evoke recognizable experiences as well as recognizable blocks. It does not explain why any particular character or creature received its specific design.

The visual-effects work also involved more than a single all-CG method. Digital Domain says it contributed more than 10 minutes of effects across 187 shots, focusing on the climactic third-act battle. The vendor describes complex CG environments, stylized lighting, crowd simulations, and character animation, and says the sequence combined practical blue-screen plates with fully CG shots. Those figures describe Digital Domain’s contribution, not the effects workload for the entire film. Digital Domain’s project page does not state a publication year.
