The Season 4 finale of The Boys is a pivotal episode because it turns Homelander’s political ambitions into control of the country, captures the Boys, and leaves the story at the low point showrunner Eric Kripke described as the end of Act 2. Calling it the series’ “most important” episode is a judgment, not an objective ranking—but its consequences make the case compelling. Season 5 has since completed the story, so the finale is best understood as the hinge into the final season, not an unresolved cliffhanger.
What happens at the end of The Boys Season 4?
The finale makes the season’s political crisis concrete. With a figurehead president elected, Homelander is effectively in charge of America. His ally Firecracker announces, “Make America Super Again.” At the same time, the Boys are rounded up, sharply reducing their ability to resist the new order.
The episode also depicts the killing of a vice president-elect. That fictional act of political violence was especially striking when the episode aired amid real-world political news; the timing prompted a warning and clarification from the production companies.
Why is the finale so important to the story?
Homelander moves from influence to effective control
Earlier in the season, Victoria Neuman was close to the Oval Office and secretly working with Homelander. The finale pays off that pressure by placing him in effective control through a figurehead president. This is more than another step in his rise: it changes the scale of the conflict from a fight against a powerful individual to resistance against a captured political order.

The Boys lose their freedom and agency
The capture of the group gives the story a clear crisis at the point where the season ends. The heroes cannot simply continue their previous campaign; the balance of power has shifted against them. Butcher’s position had already deteriorated over the season: he had lost his role as leader and had only months to live. The finale brings those pressures together rather than resolving them.
It is the intended low point before the conclusion
In a July 18, 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, showrunner Eric Kripke described the five-season story in three-act terms: “If the five seasons can be translated into a three-act movie, this is the low point at the end of Act 2, leaving room for our heroes to come roaring back in the series’ conclusion.” He said the characters needed something “apocalyptic” to befall them. That structural intention is the strongest reason to call this episode unusually important: it resets the heroes’ prospects before the final stretch.

How deliberate were the political parallels?
Kripke said the series deliberately referenced Trump and pointed to traits such as narcissism and egomania in discussing Homelander. He described the show’s social framing this way: “I wouldn’t call it a reflection, but I would say this is our worst fear of a pushed version of society.” Those comments explain the intended thematic reference points; they do not make the fictional events a prediction or a record of real events.
The specific release-week coincidence was a separate matter. Kripke told the Los Angeles Times that the episode had been filmed the prior year and that its timing alongside intense political news was not planned. The article also reported that the episode was originally titled “Assassination Run” and that a title card was added. The card said: “This episode contains scenes of fictional political violence. Any similarities to recent events are completely coincidental and unintentional. Prime Video, Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television and the producers of The Boys oppose, in the strongest terms, real-world violence of any kind.”

What did the finale set up for Season 5?
The finale set up a final season in which Homelander’s power and the Boys’ captivity were the immediate stakes. Season 5 was announced as the last season before Season 4 premiered. Amazon’s 2024 announcement described Neuman’s proximity to the Oval Office, her secret alliance with Homelander, and Butcher’s precarious position as central pressures of Season 4; the finale escalates those threads into a broader political crisis.
That cliffhanger is no longer awaiting resolution. Amazon’s current viewing guide says all five seasons are available on Prime Video and dates the series finale to May 20, 2026. Streaming availability and membership terms can vary by location and change, so check the local Prime Video listing.

Is it really the series’ most important episode?
There is no verifiable ranking of The Boys episodes by importance. A useful way to make the argument is to look at three story criteria: the scale of the political reversal, the loss of agency for the central characters, and how directly the events reshape the path to the ending. On all three, the Season 4 finale has a strong claim: Homelander becomes effectively in charge, the Boys are captured, and Kripke explicitly framed the episode as the end-of-Act-2 low point.
That makes “most important” defensible as an editorial assessment, not a settled fact. Its importance lies in what it changes and how deliberately it positions the final season—not in any claim that it is the only episode that matters.
