Director Damien Leone reportedly first considered setting the sequel about two months after Terrifier 2, but a short gap would have made Fullam’s changed appearance harder to reconcile on screen. The explanation comes from secondary coverage attributing it to a Screen Rant interview, rather than a directly available transcript of Leone’s remarks.
Why did Terrifier 3 make the time jump?
The reported reason was a practical continuity issue: Fullam had grown in the real world between productions. A story set only a couple of months after Terrifier 2 would ask viewers to accept Jonathan looking noticeably older despite little time having passed. A five-year interval gave the character’s appearance a more plausible fit with the actor’s changed look.
CBR’s October 5, 2024 report, carried through IMDb News, attributes this explanation to an interview with Leone at Screen Rant. It is a paraphrased account, not a verified verbatim quotation from the director.
How the two timeline options differed
| Story interval | What it meant for continuity |
|---|---|
| About two months, the initially considered option | Jonathan’s appearance would have had to match a very short interval despite Fullam’s real-world growth. |
| Five years, the final choice | The longer gap better accommodates Fullam’s changed appearance in the role. |
The five-year gap is best understood as a production-continuity choice reported in interview coverage. The available account does not establish that the supernatural events in the story required precisely five years, or specify what happened to Jonathan during every year of the interval.

What the five-year gap means for the story
A separate 2024 Yahoo Entertainment report also describes Terrifier 3 as taking place five years after Terrifier 2 and gives story context for Art and Sienna being out of commission in different ways. That context helps describe the setting, but it is not evidence that those events were Leone’s stated reason for choosing the interval.
