The high-cut women’s track uniform Nike showed for Team USA in April 2024 drew criticism because it appeared far more revealing than the men’s style displayed beside it. But athletes did not share one view: some objected to the pictured coverage, while others defended the available choices or said the mannequin image misrepresented the fit in person.
What sparked the controversy?
Nike presented its 2024 national and federation kits in Paris on April 12. A side-by-side image of the track and field styles showed a high-cut women’s leotard next to a more covered men’s design. The contrast quickly prompted online criticism that the women’s option looked too revealing and sexist. Nike’s announcement, CBS News and the Associated Press reported on the design and reaction.
Former professional runner Lauren Fleshman argued that athletes should not have to spend attention worrying about exposure during competition. Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku and other athletes also criticized the apparent coverage in the mannequin image. British long jumper Abigail Irozuru questioned whether female athletes had been consulted. These objections centered not only on how much the design revealed, but on who had input and whether the presentation treated women’s and men’s competition wear differently. CBS News and the AP covered those responses.
What did Nike and USATF say about athlete input and options?
Nike and USA Track & Field said athletes were involved in the design process and would have choices. Nike described a range of silhouettes for different events, body types and preferences. Its April 12 announcement counted nearly 50 unique pieces across men’s and women’s track and field, including a dozen competition styles fine-tuned for specific events. Nike Chief Innovation Officer John Hoke said the designs were developed with athletes and incorporated feedback through product development. Hurdler Anna Cockrell said of testing one fit, “During testing, this fit allowed me to move freely and without distraction, and I love how the look represents Team USA.” Nike’s announcement contains the company’s account and athlete comments.

The AP described the choices differently: it reported that women had at least 20 uniform combinations and could choose styles made for men. USATF likewise emphasized options and choice. The figures refer to different descriptions—the number of Nike pieces and styles versus combinations available to women—and should not be treated as the same count or as independent measurements. The AP report gives its account of the combinations.
Did athletes change their minds after seeing the uniform in person?
Some later comments added context to the initial reaction, but they did not amount to a single reversal. Long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall said the photograph had not represented the uniform fairly: “It was the picture that did no justice.” Sprinter Gabby Thomas said she had initially been shocked, but liked the option of competing in a brief: “I love competing in the brief.” She also said athletes could choose other styles. Long jumper Katie Moon defended women’s right to choose the clothing that suited them. The Washington Post, The Guardian and the AP reported athletes’ follow-up comments.

The distinction matters: a mannequin image can prompt legitimate questions about coverage and design, while the fit and comfort of a garment on an athlete may look or feel different. Some athletes liked the brief; others objected to the pictured coverage or raised concerns about consultation. Neither position speaks for every woman competing.

The Women’s Sports Foundation’s guidance says uniform selection should account for performance, medical and safety needs, body type, psychological readiness and cultural differences. It is general guidance, not a rule specific to Nike’s 2024 kit. That framework helps explain why the debate cannot be settled by declaring one cut universally better. Coverage, freedom of movement, comfort and personal preference can differ across athletes and events. The key questions raised by the controversy were whether athletes had meaningful choices, whether the available styles met their needs, and whether women’s uniforms were presented in a way that invited a different standard of scrutiny from men’s.

What the controversy does—and does not—show
- It shows: the high-cut option in Nike’s launch image drew criticism from some athletes and former athletes, especially in comparison with the more covered men’s style.
- It also shows: Nike and USATF said athletes had input and multiple styles to choose from, while some athletes later expressed support for particular options or disputed how the mannequin photo represented the fit.
- It does not show: that all women athletes objected, that all supported the design, or that the pictured cut was the only available uniform.
