The organizer said the shows could not go ahead safely and that tickets would be refunded automatically. In February 2026, Vienna prosecutors filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old defendant, but the latest located report does not say that a court has reached a verdict.
Why were the Vienna concerts canceled?
The concerts were scheduled for August 8, 9 and 10, 2024, at Ernst Happel Stadium. On August 7, promoter Barracuda Music announced that all three were canceled after government officials confirmed a planned attack at the venue. The organizer said it had “no choice” but to cancel “for everyone’s safety.” Reuters reported the cancellation statement and schedule.
The decision came before any of the three performances. Austrian police had anticipated about 65,000 people at each show and as many as 15,000 more outside the stadium without tickets. Those were projections for the canceled events, not attendance figures.
What did Austrian officials say about the alleged plan?
Austria’s director general for public security, Franz Ruf, said investigators had identified preparatory actions and that the 19-year-old suspect had a particular focus on the Taylor Swift concerts. Police detained two suspects on August 7, according to Reuters’ contemporaneous report.

These statements described an investigation and an alleged plot; they were not a court’s findings. Officials credited cooperation among Austrian police, the Directorate for Security and Intelligence (DSN), and foreign services with identifying the threat. Then-Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the threat was identified and combated early, preventing a tragedy, as Reuters reported.
What role did U.S. information play?
Then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby said the United States shared information with Austrian partners “to enable the disruption of a threat” to the Vienna concerts. His statement establishes that information was shared, but does not publicly detail the intelligence or describe how it was used. Reuters quoted Kirby’s remarks.
Were tickets refunded?
Barracuda Music said tickets would be refunded automatically. The reported announcement described the refund policy; the reviewed coverage does not establish whether every individual refund was completed.

On February 16, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Vienna prosecutors had filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old defendant they said planned an attack on one of the concerts. AP summarized prosecution allegations involving Islamic State propaganda, online instructions for a shrapnel bomb, production of a small amount of explosive, and attempts to obtain weapons illegally. The defendant was reported to be in custody, with proceedings planned in Wiener Neustadt. Read the Associated Press report.
These are allegations reported at the charging stage, not proof of guilt. The February 2026 report does not report a conviction or verdict, so the outcome of the case is not established here.
