The two shared Swift’s seat during host Trevor Noah’s monologue, then laughed together in a moment that also included a finger-holding gesture—an apparent nod to Erivo and Ariana Grande’s viral “holding space” interview.
Why did Taylor Swift share her seat with Cynthia Erivo?
The interaction took place during the 67th Grammy Awards on February 2, 2025, as Trevor Noah delivered his opening monologue. Erivo appeared to be searching for her table, and Swift gestured for her to come over and made room on her seat, according to iHeart’s account. The pair shared the seat and exchanged a hug or laughter, as contemporaneous coverage described it.
What was the “holding space” moment?
During the exchange, Swift held one of Erivo’s fingers while the two laughed. Coverage framed the gesture as an apparent callback to a viral interview featuring Erivo and her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande. In that interview, journalist Tracy Gilchrist asked about people connecting with the lyrics of “Defying Gravity”; Erivo responded with visible surprise, and Grande held her finger. The clip went viral and became known as the “holding space” moment. Marie Claire’s coverage explains the connection.
Was the Grammys gesture intentional?
The resemblance to the earlier clip was widely noted, but the available reporting does not establish that Swift or Erivo said they intended to recreate it. It is most accurate to describe the Grammys interaction as an apparent callback rather than a confirmed reenactment. Yahoo Entertainment, syndicating Entertainment Weekly’s report, also places the moment during Noah’s monologue and connects it to the earlier interview.
