She had watched the series since its first season and wanted the siblings to audition together; after her death, Hunter applied on his own. “But this is part of the healing process,” he told Parade in an interview published February 7, 2025.
Why did Joe Hunter apply for Survivor?
In his pre-season interview with Parade, Hunter said Joanna had been a Survivor fan since the show’s first season and had wanted the two of them to try out together. He said he did not have the courage to audition at the time. After Joanna died, he applied in her honor.
For Hunter, competing connects back to something the siblings had shared. He described taking part in the show as part of his own healing process—not as a claim that a competition can treat grief or that the same experience works for everyone.
What did Hunter say about Joanna’s death?
In the 2025 Parade interview, Hunter described Joanna’s death as connected to domestic violence. Later CBS and Paramount coverage reported that her death was officially ruled a suicide while attributing to Hunter and his family the belief that she was murdered. Those are distinct accounts: the family’s belief is an allegation, not an established finding, and the cited reports do not say the official ruling changed.
