A 2024 report said Wolfhard likened filming to making eight movies; it separately reported that Matarazzo expected the season to arrive in 2025. Netflix later described a yearlong shoot and called the final season unusually large in action, visual effects, and story. Those factors help explain the long production, but the available evidence does not establish one exclusive cause—or a Matarazzo explanation of the delay.
Did Gaten Matarazzo explain the Season 5 delay?
Not in the clearest report behind this headline. The Direct’s October 26, 2024 article attributes the “eight movies” comparison to Finn Wolfhard, who described the scale of filming. The article separately says Matarazzo told the outlet in September that he expected Season 5 in 2025. That was a release expectation, not an explanation of why production took so long. The report does not provide a verified Matarazzo quote explaining the delay, so Wolfhard’s comments should not be credited to him. The Direct’s report
What made the final season so demanding to produce?
A yearlong shoot
Netflix later said the Season 5 shoot lasted a year. A long shoot does not by itself explain the entire wait between seasons, but it shows the scale of the work involved. Netflix Tudum’s account of the final chapter
A larger production
Co-creator Ross Duffer described Season 5 as the series’ biggest season in action, visual effects, and story. A production combining extensive action, effects work, and a substantial final chapter can require significant work on set and afterward. Netflix’s description establishes the ambition; it does not assign a precise share of the delay to any one element. Netflix Tudum

Strikes and post-production
The Direct also points to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes and extensive post-production as context for the extended timeline. These are factors reported by that outlet, not a Netflix-confirmed breakdown of the delay. Taken together with the yearlong shoot and the season’s scale, they help explain why the production demanded time without proving that any one factor was the sole cause. The Direct
When did Season 5 come out?
The earlier 2025 expectation reported for Matarazzo was not the final schedule. Netflix’s official page identifies Season 5 as the series’ fifth and final season and gives its release schedule. For the dates and rollout, use Netflix Tudum’s Season 5 finale release-date and schedule page, rather than earlier forecasts. Netflix also lists Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson on its Season 5 release-date and episode-titles page.

The accurate takeaway
Season 5’s long production is consistent with a yearlong shoot, an unusually large action-and-effects workload, the 2023 strikes, and substantial post-production. Netflix confirms the shoot duration and scale; the strike and post-production context comes from The Direct. The “eight movies” explanation belongs to Finn Wolfhard in that report, while Matarazzo is cited for a 2025 release expectation—not for explaining the delay.
