Steve McBee Sr. was absent from McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys Season 2 because his son, Steven McBee Jr., said the family wanted to keep him out of public view while an FBI investigation was ongoing. That was Steven Jr.’s explanation in a PEOPLE interview published July 14, 2025—not a statement that a court or the network required his father to stay off the show.
What Steven McBee Jr. said about his father’s absence
During the Season 2 run, Steven Jr. described the investigation as a delicate situation and said the family wanted to protect his father and the family by keeping him out of the public eye until it was resolved. The explanation came in a PEOPLE interview published July 14, 2025, and was reproduced the following day by TV Insider.

In that interview, Steven Jr. said they hoped the matter would be wrapped up before the end of 2025. That was his expectation at the time, not confirmation that the case would conclude by then. The interview quote describes the family’s decision; it does not establish a legal or production order keeping Steve Sr. off camera.
What happened in Season 2 while Steve Sr. was away
Season 2 premiered on Bravo on June 30, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, with episodes streaming on Peacock the following day, according to Peacock’s announcement. The announcement introduced Steven Jr. as stepping up to run the farm in his father’s absence. It also described a $6 million payment intended to keep the farm afloat; that is a figure presented in the show’s promotional context, not an independently audited account of the farm’s finances.

The investigation had already resulted in a guilty plea
The legal case was further along than the word “ongoing” might suggest to viewers reading the July 2025 interview. Bravo’s legal timeline reports that Steve McBee Sr. pleaded guilty in November 2024 to one count of federal crop-insurance fraud. Bravo says the plea admitted fraudulent activity from 2018 through 2020 that caused economic loss to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The same coverage reports that the conduct involved more than $3 million in crop-insurance and premium subsidies.
Bravo’s later update reports a sentence of 24 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, and restitution of $4,022,124. It also says Steven Jr. stated in a July 20 interview that his father was expected to be released on September 11, 2026, and that Steve Sr. was serving his sentence at FPC Yankton. Those custody and release details can change; they are the status Bravo reported in its legal timeline, not a guarantee of a future release date.
Why the timing matters
Steven Jr.’s comment was made during Season 2’s 2025 run, while he described the investigation as ongoing. It should be read as the family’s explanation for that season’s absence, not as a current summary of the case. Bravo’s series page now lists Season 3 alongside Season 2: McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys.
