Stephen Colbert has returned to Tesla and Elon Musk on television for years—as an interviewer, a presenter of Tesla-related clips and a comedian riffing on Musk’s stunts. He also publicly said in 2022 that he drove a Tesla. That makes “biggest celebrity Tesla fan” a playful description, not a proven ranking: the available evidence does not establish what he drives today or how he compares with other celebrity Tesla owners.
What makes Colbert look like a Tesla fan?
The case rests on a recurring public connection, rather than a single declaration of fandom. Colbert interviewed Musk, brought Tesla technology into his show, joked about Tesla news and later made a first-person remark about driving one. Together, those moments explain the headline’s premise—but they do not establish an endorsement deal or unqualified admiration.
He interviewed Musk before and after launching The Late Show
On July 24, 2014, Colbert interviewed Musk on The Colbert Report. Apple TV’s episode listing identified Musk as CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors at the time. Apple TV’s episode listing records the appearance.
Musk returned on the second episode of CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in September 2015. In its report the next day, the Los Angeles Times described Colbert asking, “Are you sincerely trying to save the world?” Musk replied, “I’m trying to do good things, yeah.” Colbert also joked that Musk could be “a superhero or a supervillain,” and showed a Tesla robotic charging prototype. The exchange made Tesla part of a broader conversation about Musk’s ambitions, rather than a straightforward product endorsement. The Los Angeles Times’ account describes the segment.

Tesla technology and stunts became material for the show
In October 2015, The Late Show featured a Jalopnik video demonstrating the Tesla Model S Autopilot feature. That is evidence the program aired a Tesla-related clip, not that Colbert owned or drove a Model S. Jalopnik’s coverage identifies the car and feature.
When Musk sent a Tesla Roadster into space aboard the Falcon Heavy test flight in 2018, Colbert turned the stunt into a monologue joke. TIME reported that he called Musk “King Nerd” and joked, “I relinquish my crown.” The Roadster was Musk’s space-launch payload—not a car linked to Colbert personally. TIME’s account of the monologue provides the context.

Did Stephen Colbert say he drives a Tesla?
Yes. A RealClearPolitics video page published March 8, 2022, attributes to Colbert the remark “I’ll Pay $15 A Gallon Because I Drive A Tesla,” made during comments about high gas prices. It is the clearest cited evidence of his own stated connection to a Tesla. Because that wording is the page title, it should not automatically be treated as a complete verbatim transcript of everything he said. RealClearPolitics’ video page dates and attributes the statement.
What that remark does—and does not—establish
- It establishes that Colbert publicly said in 2022 that he drove a Tesla.
- It does not identify the model, document when or how he obtained the car, or verify whether he still drives one today.
- It does not connect him personally to the Model S in the 2015 Autopilot clip or the Roadster in the 2018 spaceflight joke.
Is he really the biggest celebrity Tesla fan?
There is no substantiated ranking here. The cited coverage shows Colbert repeatedly engaging with Tesla-related subjects and making a dated public statement about driving one, but it does not compare him with other celebrity owners or measure enthusiasm. “Biggest” works as a humorous headline hook; it is not a verifiable conclusion from these examples.

Colbert’s on-air approach also matters: interviews, technology clips and jokes are different from sustained product praise. His record makes him a notable celebrity who has publicly connected himself to Tesla, but the available evidence does not show that he is Tesla’s most devoted celebrity fan.
