Paramount did not cancel Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. On June 12, 2025, Paramount+ announced that the series had been renewed for a fifth and final six-episode season. The show ends after season five because that order was explicitly for a final season. The “two seasons” in the headline refers to two renewals: a season-four renewal announced in April 2024, and the final-season renewal announced in June 2025. Calling the ending a cancellation is shorthand, and it misstates the formal action.
What the official announcement said
Paramount+ announced on June 12, 2025 that Strange New Worlds was “renewed for a fifth and final six-episode season.” The announcement quoted executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman:
“We are so grateful to Paramount+ for giving us the opportunity to complete our mission of five seasons, as we imagined, alongside an extraordinary cast and crew.”
That statement describes the producers’ creative goal: finishing the five-season arc they had planned. It is their public framing. It does not explain the company’s internal business reasoning, and it does not say whether any other considerations were involved.

Why season four was built like a possible finale
The most direct account of the creative sequence comes from Goldsman in his September 30, 2026 interview with Space. He said the team did not know whether a fifth season would happen while it was shaping season four:
Rank #2
- Genre: TV Sci-Fi
- Playback Duration: 556
- Rating: NR
- Number of Movies: 0
- Movie Title: Star Trek - Strange New Worlds: Season Two
“We didn’t know whether we were going to have a season 5. So we built a thing that was going to serve as a potential season finale. Fortunately, as we were still breaking it, we ended up with our season 5. So we then reengineered a bunch of things to not end the show. But it was originally designed in case it was our last season.”
In practical terms, the season-four finale was written to stand as an ending. When the fifth-season order arrived while the writers were still developing material, they changed the plan so the story would continue. Goldsman’s account establishes that season four was developed under uncertainty about its future. It does not give the date or terms of any private discussions with the network.

Separating the four questions behind “why did it end?”
Most confusion comes from treating four different things as one. The table below separates them.
| Question | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Official public action | A final-season renewal was announced on June 12, 2025. No cancellation was announced. | Not stated: any business terms attached to the order |
| Planned endpoint | The fifth season is six episodes and is the last season | Not stated: a premiere date for season five |
| Creator uncertainty | Season four was built as a possible series finale before the fifth season was secured (Goldsman, September 30, 2026) | Not stated: the exact date or terms of private discussions |
| Corporate rationale | The official announcement frames the ending around completing the producers’ five-season plan | Not stated: any ratings, cost, corporate, or executive-level reason for the decision |
What the sources do not establish
Several explanations circulate for why a series ends, but none of the following is supported by the official announcement or the producers’ comments:
- Ratings or audience figures tied to the decision
- Production budget or cost pressures
- A corporate merger or ownership change as the cause
- A specific executive’s decision
Until a direct, attributable source addresses these, they should be treated as speculation.
