What happened to Splendour in the Grass?
The festival’s 2024 edition was scheduled for 19–21 July at Ngarindjin / North Byron Parklands, near Byron Bay in northern New South Wales. On 27 March, organisers announced it would not go ahead. The announcement came roughly two weeks after the lineup was revealed, with Kylie Minogue, Future and Arcade Fire among the advertised headliners.
Organisers said the decision was “due to unexpected events” and promised that ticket holders would receive automatic refunds. Their statement did not specify what those events were. ABC News reported the cancellation and the organisers’ statement.
Why was the 2024 festival cancelled?
The organisers did not disclose a detailed reason. A separate explanation came from Mitch Wilson, managing director of the Australian Festival Association. In 2024, Wilson said that festival costs were rising while ticket sales were not sufficient to cover them. He described costs as “up 30-40 per cent across the board.” That was his account of pressures on Australian festivals, not a published breakdown of Splendour’s finances or a verified figure for its costs.

Other sector voices described similar pressures without confirming them as the cause of Splendour’s decision. APRA AMCOS said on 27 March 2024 that rising production costs, insurance premiums and state regulations were making cultural events more fragile. ABC’s coverage of festival cancellations quoted the industry’s concerns.
Creative Australia’s 2024 report offers wider context: as summarised by ABC, 56 per cent of music festivals were profitable in 2022–23, while more than one-third were losing money. Those are sector-wide findings, not evidence of Splendour’s financial position. ABC reported the findings from Creative Australia’s report.

What did organisers say in 2025?
In January 2025, organisers announced that Splendour would not return that year. They said, “Splendour needs a little more time to recharge and we won’t be back in 2025,” adding that it would return “when the time is right.” They did not give a date or explain what would need to change before the festival could resume. ABC News reported the 2025 announcement.
Is Splendour in the Grass permanently cancelled?
The organisers’ statements do not establish that the festival is permanently cancelled, but they also do not confirm that it will return. The January 2025 update ruled out that year and offered no future date. The available statements leave its longer-term status unresolved.

How does this fit the festival’s history?
Splendour in the Grass began in 2001. Its 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled because of COVID-19. Those pandemic-era cancellations were distinct from the organisers’ 2024 explanation of “unexpected events” and the 2025 decision to take more time. ABC’s report on the 2024 cancellation recounts the festival’s earlier history.
There is also debate about the future of large festivals beyond their finances. Dr Sam Whiting of the University of South Australia has argued that broad, multi-genre events built around “there’s something for everyone” may be losing their fit with audience tastes. That is analysis of a wider programming trend, not an explanation given by Splendour’s organisers for either announcement.
