Some viewers have reported YouTube ad breaks with countdowns as long as 90 seconds, but YouTube said in April 2026 that it does not have a 90-second non-skippable ad format. The company attributed those timers to a bug that displayed inaccurate times for shorter ads and said a fix was rolling out. YouTube’s documented ad formats do include non-skippable ads, ads grouped back to back, and TV ads that can be longer than those on other devices.
What YouTube says its ad formats are
YouTube’s Help page describes four formats that help explain what viewers may encounter: skippable ads, non-skippable ads, bumper ads, and ad pods.
- Skippable video ads: viewers can skip them after five seconds.
- Non-skippable video ads: listed as 15 or 20 seconds, depending on regional standards; on TVs they may be up to 30 seconds.
- Bumper ads: non-skippable ads lasting up to six seconds.
- Ad pods: two video ads can play back to back on long-form videos of at least five minutes.
Ads may appear before, during, or after a video. YouTube says new long-form videos automatically show pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, or non-skippable ads when appropriate. Mid-roll ads can be enabled on videos longer than eight minutes.
Why a break can feel longer than one ad
A countdown may describe an ad break rather than one individual ad. YouTube documents ad pods with two back-to-back video ads on qualifying long-form videos, so viewers should distinguish the duration of a single ad from the total time before a video resumes. Device also matters: the platform’s listed maximum for non-skippable ads is longer on TVs than on other devices.

In a September 2023 announcement, Google described 30-second non-skippable connected-TV ads, along with work on grouped ad breaks and clearer displays of remaining break time. Those details provide historical context for TV ad experiences; the announcement does not establish that every experiment mentioned is still active.
What happened with the reported 90-second timers
In April 2026, viewers reported seeing 90-second timers during television ad breaks. YouTube told 9to5Google that the timers were caused by a bug showing inaccurate, higher times for shorter ads, and that a fix was rolling out. The company said it had no 90-second non-skippable ad format and was not testing one. The reports were real, but the displayed countdown was not evidence that YouTube had introduced a 90-second ad.

How widespread are long-ad reports?
Reports and polls show that some viewers say they have encountered unusually long unskippable ads, but they do not establish how often this happens across YouTube. In a January 2025 Android Authority reader poll with more than 8,600 votes, 31% of respondents said the longest unskippable ad they had encountered exceeded two minutes. Because respondents selected themselves, the poll is not representative of all viewers and cannot explain the cause of any individual ad experience.
Google also cited a 2022 survey in its 2023 connected-TV announcement: 79% of 312 U.S. adults surveyed by Google/YouTube via Qualtrics preferred ads grouped together rather than distributed through long-form TV content. That is a company-reported survey result, not a universal preference. The same announcement said 65% of U.S. YouTube connected-TV watch time in December 2022 was on content 21 minutes or longer; YouTube separately reported more than 700 million hours of content watched daily on TV screens in 2021. These are historical company figures, not measurements of current usage.

What viewers can do
Check the device and countdown
Note whether the ad appeared in the TV app, on a computer, mobile device, or console. Check whether the timer is counting down one ad or an entire break, and whether a skip option appears after five seconds. A timer that appears inconsistent with the ad itself may reflect the kind of display error YouTube described in April 2026.
