But several well-documented controversies help explain why he draws strong criticism. The clearest reasons include a civil jury finding against him in Nikita Hand’s case, a series of incidents that ended in guilty pleas or sporting sanctions, and political statements that drew public rebuke. These events are not all equivalent: some are established legal outcomes, while others are disputes or opinions.
Why the headline says “hate”—and what the evidence can show
“We hate” is provocative headline language, not a claim supported by polling. The available reporting does not establish how many people dislike McGregor. The reasons below describe criticisms commonly connected to documented events and public statements; they do not imply that every criticism is shared by everyone.
Legal outcomes matter. A civil finding is not a criminal conviction, an arrest is not proof of guilt, and a dropped charge is not the same as a guilty plea. The distinction is especially important in the most serious case associated with McGregor’s public image.
The Nikita Hand civil case and its aftermath
1. A civil jury found McGregor liable
In November 2024, an Irish High Court jury found against McGregor in Nikita Hand’s civil action and awarded her €248,603 in damages, according to the Associated Press. McGregor denied Hand’s allegation. This was a civil finding, not a criminal conviction.

The state’s Director of Public Prosecutions had declined to bring a criminal prosecution, a decision the office reaffirmed after review. That does not cancel or reverse the civil verdict: the two proceedings have different purposes and standards of proof. Criminal guilt must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt; a civil claim is decided on the balance of probabilities. The Journal’s case explainer sets out that distinction.
2. The verdict survived the appeals described in reporting
McGregor appealed, but Ireland’s Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal in July 2025. In December 2025, RTÉ reported that the Supreme Court would not hear a further appeal. RTÉ’s appeal coverage also reported the Court of Appeal’s criticism of McGregor’s public challenge to the verdict and Hand’s testimony. For critics, the public response to a serious civil finding became part of the controversy, not merely the original case.

Incidents that produced legal or sporting consequences
3. The 2018 New York bus attack
In April 2018, McGregor and associates attacked a bus carrying UFC fighters in Brooklyn, according to the Sporting News timeline. McGregor later resolved the New York case through a disorderly-conduct plea. Critics saw the episode as a dangerous escalation of promotion around a fight, with people other than the intended target exposed to risk.
4. The UFC 229 post-fight brawl
After McGregor’s October 2018 bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov, a brawl followed in the arena. Nevada’s athletic commission imposed a suspension and fine, as summarized in the Sporting News timeline. The episode reinforced a criticism that McGregor’s hostility could spill beyond pre-fight theatrics and affect other people in the event.

5. The Miami phone case
In 2019, McGregor was charged in Miami after a fan’s phone was damaged. The complainant later dropped the charges, according to the Sporting News timeline. The outcome should not be described as a conviction; the episode nonetheless contributed to criticism of his conduct toward members of the public.
6. A guilty plea after a Dublin pub assault
In 2019, McGregor pleaded guilty to assault after punching a pub patron in Dublin, the Sporting News timeline reports. Unlike an allegation or a charge that was later dropped, this was a guilty plea. For critics, it was a particularly direct example of violence outside the sporting context.

7. Driving offenses and a suspended sentence
An Irish driving case resolved in 2024 resulted in a five-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban, according to TIME’s 2025 profile. The court outcome offered another concrete reason for criticism separate from disputes about his fighting persona.

8. A combative persona that can read as intimidation
McGregor built a public profile around taunts, bravado and confrontation. Supporters may see that as promotion or confidence; critics may read it as needlessly aggressive, especially when controversies move from press events into public spaces or legal proceedings. This is an interpretation of his public image, not a separate legal finding.

9. Anti-immigration rhetoric
McGregor’s anti-immigration statements have attracted criticism. TIME’s September 2025 profile reports on his rhetoric and the political response to it. Taoiseach Micheál Martin said McGregor’s comments “did not reflect the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, or the views of the people of Ireland.” That is Martin’s attributed criticism, not evidence of a unanimous national view.
10. Political ambition made his statements more consequential
McGregor’s effort to seek a presidential nomination brought further attention to his political views, according to TIME’s 2025 profile. Some people may object not just to the statements themselves but to the prospect of a high-profile public figure seeking political office while expressing those positions. This overlaps with criticism of his rhetoric; it is not an independent measure of public opinion.
How to weigh the criticisms
The controversies differ in evidentiary status and seriousness. The Hand case ended in a civil finding that survived the appeals described above; the Dublin pub case involved a guilty plea; the New York matter ended in a disorderly-conduct plea; the UFC 229 incident brought sporting sanctions; the Miami charges were dropped; and the driving case resulted in a suspended sentence and ban. Political criticism concerns McGregor’s public statements and ambitions, while objections to his combative persona are interpretations of how he presents himself.
That is why a list of “15 reasons” would risk making the case look stronger by counting overlapping reactions as separate facts. The most defensible answer is not that everyone hates McGregor, but that a series of serious legal outcomes, public incidents and controversial statements has made him a polarizing figure.
