Haley Dunphy is the character most likely meant by complaints about how Modern Family wrapped things up: she leaves with Dylan, her husband and the father of their twins. Some viewers saw that pairing as a step backward for Haley. But the title’s reference to “this character” is ambiguous, and the discussion around the finale also criticizes Alex’s hinted romance with Arvin and the family’s separation. Those are examples of fan reactions, not evidence that most viewers disliked the ending.
What happens to Haley in the finale?
In the two-part series finale, “The Finale, Parts 1 and 2,” Haley and Dylan leave the Dunphy home with their twins. The series does not show a later flash-forward explaining how their life together turns out. Instead, it closes on the family saying goodbye and taking a photo, with Phil’s porch-light sentiment pointing toward future reunions. ABC’s official recap frames the changes as a new normal in which the family continues to support one another.

Why do some viewers object to Haley and Dylan?
The central objection in the fan discussion reviewed is that Haley’s ending with Dylan feels like a return to an earlier relationship rather than a culmination of her development. One commenter summarized the complaint as “Haley ended up taking the mother path and with Dylan.” That wording captures an individual reaction, not a consensus or a measure of how viewers responded overall. The Reddit discussion also contains viewers who liked the finale or thought some objections came from the sadness of the show ending.
Does the relationship feel earned?
That is an interpretive question, not something the finale settles. Haley and Dylan’s history gives the pairing a clear connection to the show’s past, but viewers who wanted Haley’s final chapter to emphasize independence or a different kind of growth may find the choice disappointing. The ending leaves their future unwritten, so it does not show whether their marriage changes the qualities that viewers associate with their earlier relationship.

What else contributes to the reaction?
Haley’s ending is part of a broader set of departures. Alex accepts a job in Switzerland, with a possible relationship with Arvin left open; Luke plans to attend the University of Oregon; Cam takes a college football coaching job in Missouri and moves with Mitchell and their family; and Jay encourages Gloria to pursue real estate as he prepares to travel with her to Colombia. These choices create a new arrangement for the family rather than preserving its familiar shared routine.
Alex and Arvin
Some viewers objected that Alex might pursue Arvin, who had previously dated Haley. The finale hints at that possibility rather than presenting a fully developed relationship, so the question is whether the suggestion gives Alex room to define her own future or makes her romantic life feel connected to her sister’s past. The ending leaves that unresolved.

The family’s separation
The geographic moves can feel like credible next steps for the characters, but they also take the family away from the everyday interactions that shaped the series. That tension is built into the goodbye sequence: the characters are moving forward, while the audience is losing the shared routine the show was built around.
What did the creators intend the ending to do?
Creator Christopher Lloyd described the departures as a chance for the family to say goodbye to a unit that would not remain in the same form. Steve Levitan said the finale was meant to signal good things ahead while leaving viewers to imagine what happens next. Lloyd also said the porch-light image was intended to suggest that the family would reunite. BuzzFeed’s coverage reports these comments alongside interviews with the creators.

That open-ended approach explains both the hopefulness and the frustration some viewers felt. The finale offers reassurance and possibility, but it does not show the characters building their next lives together. Julie Bowen called the ending a difficult balance and said she found it satisfying; Eric Stonestreet acknowledged that some viewers might feel disappointed or unfulfilled. Their comments indicate that varied reactions were anticipated, not that any particular response was dominant. PEOPLE’s coverage, republished on Myspace, reports their remarks.

No reliable audience statistic in the sources cited here measures dissatisfaction with the finale. A Reddit thread and comments can illustrate what some viewers disliked, but they cannot establish how widespread those views are. The most accurate takeaway is that Haley’s pairing with Dylan prompted a recognizable complaint in the discussion reviewed, alongside criticism of Alex’s possible romance and the family’s dispersal; reactions in that discussion were mixed.
