Billy Bob Thornton says Landman works because it mixes emotion, humor, drama, danger and absurdity. But some season 2 criticism points to a different issue: viewers who came for the West Texas oil-business story felt that family and other side plots sometimes pushed it into the background. The available criticism captures that reaction, not proof that fans broadly hate the season.
What Billy Bob Thornton says makes Landman work
In an Esquire interview published January 18, 2026, Thornton described the show’s appeal as a blend of contrasting elements: “The reason this show has such a huge fan base is because you have emotion, you have humor, drama, danger, absurdity. It has all the elements of life.” Read the Esquire interview.
That is Thornton’s account of the series’ intended tonal range, not a point-by-point response to season 2 complaints or a survey of viewers. He also said humor helps the show’s more outrageous scenes land, described working collaboratively with co-creator Taylor Sheridan, and noted that Sheridan wrote Tommy Norris in Thornton’s voice.
Why some viewers say season 2 fell off
The oil-business story felt crowded out
A recurring complaint in a Reddit discussion titled “Has Landman fallen off with Season 2?” was that the oil-industry plot receded behind domestic or other side stories. Some commenters wanted more of “the oil stuff,” and described parts of the season as “boring” or as having “plots going nowhere.” These are examples of self-selected commenters’ reactions, not a representative measure of the audience. Pacing and payoff frustrated some commenters
The same thread includes complaints about pacing and scenes commenters considered pointless. Those reactions suggest a mismatch for viewers who expected the business drama to remain central: when a season gives substantial space to other storylines, the oil plot can feel less urgent even if the show’s broader mix is deliberate.
One critic found the season uneven, then praised the finale
Tom’s Guide’s January 18, 2026 finale review said season 2 had strong moments but wavered between boring and cringey. The reviewer considered Tommy’s core oil-business drama a bright spot, criticized weaker storylines, and said the finale resolved much of the season’s frustration. That is one critic’s assessment, not a verdict shared by all viewers. Read the review.

Does the evidence show that fans hate season 2?
No. The title’s “fans hate” wording is stronger than the evidence supports. A single critic’s review and an online discussion show that some viewers objected to the season’s focus and pacing; neither establishes how common those opinions are among the show’s audience. Thornton’s comments explain his view of the show’s appeal, but they do not measure fan satisfaction.
Popularity figures do not answer the sentiment question either. Paramount reported that season 2’s premiere drew over 9.2 million global streaming views in its first two days, and said that was 262% above season 1’s premiere. Those are Paramount+ Global Internal Metrics, reported by Paramount Press Express in 2025; they indicate premiere reach, not whether viewers liked the season. See Paramount’s announcement.

For historical context, the Los Angeles Times reported that season 1 reached 14.9 million households in its first four weeks in January 2025. That household figure covers a different period and unit from Paramount’s season 2 streaming-view count, so the two numbers should not be treated as a direct comparison or as evidence of approval. Landman is a drama set in the oil fields of West Texas. Paramount identifies Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace as co-creators and Thornton as Tommy Norris; Sam Elliott joined season 2 as Tommy’s father, T.L. Paramount said new episodes were available Sundays exclusively on Paramount+.
