Some viewers have criticized the Devil May Cry anime’s portrayal of Dante and Lady, but the available evidence does not show that fans as a whole reject it. The dispute centers on how the series balances Dante’s swagger and competence with quieter character work, and how it reshapes Lady’s voice and story. The actors and showrunner describe those choices as deliberate adaptations, not attempts to reproduce the games beat for beat.
How the anime relates to the games
Netflix describes its animated Devil May Cry as based on Capcom’s video-game property. Led by Adi Shankar and animated by Studio Mir, the series follows Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, in a conflict involving a portal between the human and demon realms. Bosch has emphasized that the adaptation changes some connections while retaining elements of the characters’ histories: “It’s not one to one. […] A lot of the backstories are intact. Some of the meeting points are a little bit different, because we’re opening up each character even further.” That distinction matters: a changed encounter or emphasis is not, by itself, evidence that the series has discarded a character’s entire game history. What viewers criticize about Dante and Lady
Discussion around the adaptation includes complaints that Dante feels “underplayed” and that Lady swears too much. Those phrases capture specific objections, not a measured consensus: the sources available here do not establish how many fans agree, and no representative poll or named statistic quantifies dissatisfaction.

Dante: swagger, humor and apparent strength
For viewers attached to the games’ flamboyant, formidable Dante, a portrayal that gives him more room for vulnerability or places him in quieter scenes can feel like a reduction in his presence or competence. The meaningful comparison is not simply whether the anime’s Dante is “strong enough”; it is how the series distributes his agency, victories, humor, swagger and serious moments across its story.
Lady: language, agency and a different emphasis
Complaints about Lady’s swearing concern her voice and tone, while broader adaptation questions concern how much agency she gets and what the story foregrounds about her. Those are related but distinct issues: a viewer can accept a reworked backstory and still dislike the dialogue, or welcome a deeper exploration of her past while wanting her actions to drive more of the plot.

Why the creators made different choices
Bosch offered a defense of the anime’s focus on Lady’s darker experiences, while making clear he was describing his own view of the character’s history. He recalled Lady as “a badass” when she first appeared in the games, then argued that later portrayals softened what was unique about her. The anime, he said, explores “her darkness in the things that she’s gone through.” That is the actor’s interpretation of the adaptation, not proof that every game fan shares it.
Taylor-Compton described anime Lady as “the heart, not in the soft sentimental way” and “the human anchor of this world.” She stressed the contrast between Lady, who has no powers, and characters such as Dante in a supernatural setting. That framing can explain why the series gives her past and humanity weight; it does not settle whether each viewer finds the balance convincing. A deliberate change in tone
Shankar has described the games’ tone as “maximalist” — “loud, […] brash, […] cocky” — and said episode six was designed to “go quiet. Turn down the volume.” He has also explained that he wanted antagonists whose own stories make them feel like heroes. These choices help account for shifts in pace and perspective, but they do not determine whether a viewer thinks a quieter episode or a more layered antagonist works.
Listening to fans without promising to please everyone
In a May 2025 interview, Shankar said, “Yes, I listen to fan feedback. And no, I don’t try to please everyone. That’s a trap.” He described his aim as honoring the franchise’s “emotional contract” while also surprising and challenging fans. That approach acknowledges feedback without promising that every adaptation decision will match a viewer’s preferred version. Shankar discussed fan feedback with GamesRadar+.

Season two changes the comparison
Criticism of the first season is not the only available assessment of the anime’s portrayal of Dante. A GamesRadar+ review published May 12, 2026, said the second season feels more confident about him and suggested that viewers who thought season one “nerfed” Dante may be happier with the follow-up. That is one critic’s view, not evidence that fans broadly changed their minds. It is also a reason to compare seasons separately rather than treating an initial setup and later development as interchangeable. Read the season-two review.
Netflix’s June 4, 2026 update says season two is streaming and the series has been renewed for a third and final season. It describes season two as a conflict between Dante and his estranged twin brother Vergil; the announcement does not say that season three has been released. Netflix Tudum has the season update.

How to judge the disagreement fairly
When comparing the anime with the games, or season one with season two, focus on the same kind of evidence in each version:
- Character function: Who drives the scene or major story beat, and how much agency does Dante or Lady receive?
- Tone and performance: How does the version balance swagger, humor, vulnerability, profanity and seriousness?
- Backstory and motivation: Which histories remain intact, which meetings change, and what does the series add?
- Action and competence: Do the characters’ demonstrated skills and victories match what you expect from the games?
- Season and format: Are you comparing equivalent stages of the story, rather than judging a first-season setup against later-season development?
The disagreement is real as a set of identifiable criticisms, but the available evidence does not measure its scale. The fairest conclusion is that the anime makes consequential choices about character, tone and story structure; whether those choices honor Dante and Lady depends on which qualities a viewer considers essential.
