The collections offered ancestry-specific digital assets through its licensed collaboration with Darrington Press. Hero Forge later announced that current and future Pro and Pro+ subscribers would get them at no extra cost, alongside account-credit reimbursements for qualifying prior purchasers. The evidence confirms criticism, but does not establish how representative it was of Critical Role fans as a whole.
What was the Hero Forge collaboration?
Hero Forge released Daggerheart Collaborator Collections under a licensed partnership with Darrington Press, Critical Role’s publishing company. The collections consisted of ancestry-specific digital assets for creating characters on Hero Forge’s miniature-design platform. They were not the same thing as buying a physical Critical Role miniature.
Hero Forge said it had received requests for larger licensed intellectual-property offerings and wanted to provide a financial benefit to major IP partners. In its explanation, sharing revenue from purchased miniatures was not workable because miniatures can combine parts from different intellectual properties, complicating licensing fees and branding. The company said it therefore chose to sell the parts themselves and share revenue with its partner. That is Hero Forge’s account of its reasoning; the private contract terms have not been made public.
Why did the paid collections draw criticism?
Comments surfaced in the r/criticalrole discussion include individual complaints about cost, access, perceived value, and expectations for the platform. These are examples of reactions, not a ranked or representative measure of public opinion.

- Expectations about access: Some users objected to separately paid parts because they expected assets to fit within Hero Forge’s ordinary platform access model.
- Perceived value: Some questioned paying separately for ancestry-specific assets they viewed as limited in scope or insufficiently distinctive.
- Parity and sharing: Critics worried that paywalled assets could make it harder for creators to participate on equal terms, particularly when building and sharing designs with the Community Library.
- Disappointment with the collaboration: Some comments expressed concern that Daggerheart or Critical Role could be implicated by association with the decision.
These themes help explain the dispute, but they do not show how many fans held any particular view. Hero Forge itself described significant concern and division; no representative poll or independently verified count of the backlash is established here.
What did Hero Forge say about demand for paid content?
In its update, Hero Forge reported that its annual survey found 68% of respondents were somewhat to very interested in paid licensed-IP items, while 32% expressed disinterest or a strong preference against them. The statement does not provide the survey year, field dates, sample size, or methodology, so the figures should not be treated as a representative measure of Critical Role fans or all Hero Forge customers. The company also acknowledged that signs of interest did not mean it had handled the details of paid access correctly.

Hero Forge’s team-authored post conceded: “the details of how that paid content works is, of course, extremely important, and we got that wrong.” It also described digital miniature crafting as a shared hobby and said it was working with Darrington Press on a new path forward. The statement does not identify an individual speaker; these comments should not be attributed to a Critical Role cast member or a Darrington Press representative.

It also said prior purchasers who had a Pro membership would be automatically reimbursed as account credit over the following weeks.
